Re: Nothing new under the sun from 1929
[quote="ShortNorth"]Hans, that really takes me right back - I grew up in the 'Gong in the 50's (1948 to 1960) near Corrimal.
Certainly remember the Sani man - my mum used to say if I didn't do well at school, that's the only job I'd get in life ! We lived on the side of a hill and the poor bugger had to carry the full cans uphill nearly 50 metres (Na ! I'll be proper - 150 feet) to the road !
And the Ice man, at least until the mid-50's when dad bought our first refrigerator.
Yep - home milk delivery, and the Baker came round about half hour after I got home from school - I always got straight into the fresh hot crusts from both ends of the loaf (and got into trouble for doing so).
Didn't use the Co-op or Meat man, dad always went to their shops !
Don't remember any Hawkers, they probably came round when I was at school.
Ah ! The 'Gong, probably the most wonderful place in OZ.
All these things so long ago, a time to savor, and gone forever, but NEVER forgotten.
The 'Gong lives in my heart until I drop.

Hi Brian. If you are on Facebook, get on to: Lost Wollongong. You will like that.
Hans
It's still a beautiful place.
