Keeping the fridge cold on the Spirit of Tasmania
Hello everyone, we are headed to Tasmania in January for 3 months, just wondering if anyone can tell us how well their fridge kept while crossing Bass Straight on the ferry. As we would be travelling for a few days to get to the ferry should keep the fridge empty and 'eat out' until after the crossing or do others that have crossed found that the fridge has kept OK. We presume we cannot run the fridge on gas while on the vessel.
Any 'Bright Ideas or advice will be appreciated.

Re: Keeping the fridge cold on the Spirit of Tasmania
I know when my folks made the trip they took everything that needed to be cold out of the fridge, placed it in their 50L Waeco and ran the Waeco off the van's 12V battery.

P&E, no probs!
The search facility is still a tad ordinary. I only found my own post (that I referenced to you) by using a Google search as I knew I had answered this query before.

Re: Keeping the fridge cold on the Spirit of Tasmania
We always run our fridge for a couple of days prior to going on the Spirit to make sure it is nice and cold, stock it up with whatever we want and leave it closed. Don't open it while you are waiting to board and you should find that it is still nice and cold when you dock on the other side of the Strait.

Re: Keeping the fridge cold on the Spirit of Tasmania
Hey Seafever, I didn't think you needed a fridge in Tassie, after all it's only a stones throw from the south pole. I had a mate work in Antarctica about 20 years ago as a stationary engine & refrigeration mechanic - they had to use fridges to stop the beer from freezing, Makes sense when you think about it. I always reckoned I would visit Tassie when it moved up the coast to about Rockhampton or the Whitsundays, but from all the comments I have read on the forum about the place it could be worth doing the trip across - I'm just not too sure what we could do for rest of the day though. diesel
