I reccomend going from Queenstown to Strahan. It is steeper and you really get to see the steam engine at it’s best.how good are the roads from queenstown to cradel mountain ? No problem. We towed a 24ft van with a 100LC.we are towing a 3ton 23ft van . would you suggest going right to west coast or left to east coast from devonport first .we are there for 4 weeks ? West coast has beautiful rugged scenery, the East has more gentle slopes and beautiful beaches. Either way is fine. what are some of the must sees There are too many to list. Just go and enjoy it all. thanks Andrew Colin.

Re: Some question for our trip
We did the train trip a couple of years ago and enjoyed our day, the weather was not the greatest but still a good trip, the meal was just a small box with sandwich and a piece of fruit. As far as the drive goes, we had an 18 ft van when we went over and I would not hesitate taking our new van over in the future, you can take your van almost anywhere with care and just take your time.

Re: Some question for our trip
If you realy want some homework have a look at our blog www.tassietour.blogspot.com everywhere you go s beautiful and you’ll find 4 weeks isn’t long enough, if you plan on doing the franklin river tour as well I suggets you do the train first then the river cruise, they are both great but the cruise is the best, don’t miss the east coast especially the bay of fires Frank

When you do the cruise go with the local crew instead of Federal Hotels boat. http://www.worldheritagecruises.com.au/ Much better service, very beautiful food and you sit where you like instead of being stuck in the middle for cheaper seats.

Hi Andrew, you will enjoy tassie road is narrow and lots of bends but you will take you van there with no problem, which way to go well that depends what else you want to see, there are so many wonderful places there, we have been living there for 7 years and still trying to see all of it.
Cheers Paul

Re: Some question for our trip
Andrew
As other posters have said the roads are a bit windy & steep in places but no worse than some on the mainland. We have the same size van 2.9t 23ft, just take your time. When on the West Coast take the road between Strahan & Tullah, via Zeehan (or vice a versa) that crosses the Reece Dam much better grade, not so windy & better scenery. It doesn’t make any difference which direction you go when you leave the ferry, but do the circuit, don’t travel down the centre.
The only problem you should have is that you only have 4 weeks. Enjoy your trip to our great Island.

Re: Some question for our trip
Tassie is absolutely fab we have twice toured in a caravan 21′ Jayco and although some roads can be narrow and windy we didn’t experience any problems, but we suggest you don’t try to cover all of Tasmania in a short period. On our last trip we spent 8 weeks and we concentrated on the North and East and found plenty to explore obviously it depends on your areas of interest, but we travelled up the centre on the way back to the boat and found it very good there’s always next time so take it steady and don’t forget to smell the roses.
