Few vans carry as much innovation as the Sunland Patriot 186 – with rain collection tanks, diesel heating, solar and more, it’s widely regarded as the future of free camping

There were times when free camping meant little more than towing your caravan off to the side of a main road, unhitching and spending the night. As caravans grew, so too did caravan parks – and now we’ve come full circle with the new generation of free camping caravans. If there’s one that truly has every gram of fibreglass and steel dedicated to comfortable free camping – it’s the Sunland Patriot 186.

Boasting everything you need to stay weeks at a pristine, untouched location, the Sunland Patriot is truly a van by travellers, for travellers. Small touches like the rear rain collection tanks, the positioning of water tanks around the axles and choosing diesel heating/cooling over electric or gas shows the Patriot is king in off-road capability and campsite efficiency.

Despite its gloriously over-built suspension, the Sunland Patriot doesn’t boast acres of chequer plating like many other off-road vans. Instead, it’s got something even better - their lightweight but strong ‘Raptor’ coating (made from strengthened urethane) is an effective stone guard without the weight. This means you can go further off-road without suffering all the added weight of traditional chequer plating.

Underneath the Patriot lies some real manufacturing magic. Amongst the Cruisemaster 4-shock suspension that soaks up every corrugation and dirt track is a custom built ally steel chassis that’s had excess metal cut away to save weight whilst retaining the same strength. It doesn’t end there – Sunland have also cleverly placed their water tanks up high between the independent suspension – meaning they won’t cop all the dirt and debris of off-road travel.

Despite its off-road pedigree the Sunland Patriot 186 is spacious and modern inside. With every square centimetre accounted for, it boasts luxury features like under cabinetry LED lighting, ducted air conditioning, full leather upholstery plus a full internal multimedia system including a 24in TV/DVD. From the bedroom to the full separate ensuite, it’s a case of classic Aussie ingenuity to give you the most amount of room possible.

The master bedroom aboard the Sunland Patriot offer supreme comfort after a hard day’s travelling. The Queen bed is constructed from an egg shell foam that moulds to the form and shape of your body – making it perfect for aching bones and aging backs. If that’s not enough, it also comes with in-built privacy screens to separate your sleeping area from your living area – a brilliant idea for the early risers.
