We too use Frontline or similar. Better to put that on asap because if the dog scratches because of fleas they can develop Summer itch, like an Exczema and it drives them nuts. It is hard to get rid of once a dog develops it. We usually keep applying most of the year but at the end of winter is probably a good time to start.

When living in areas not handy to towns, I used to make up a mix of Garlic Powder, Flowers of Sulphur, [not garden Sulphur] and Slippery Elm Powder,[soothing to the stomache] mixed with Honey to give the dogs daily for Fleas and Ticks. Mixed to a firm paste, you can roll small amounts into "Pills" to pop down their throats.
Just about 1/4 t'spoon a day worked fine, for Cattle dog size.

If they do happen to get Summer Itch, or anything like it, just mix some Flowers of Sulphur [you get it at the chemist] and Oil to a paste, and apply it.

I just used to use Olive Oil, as I always had plenty on hand. Only ever had to do it once. If the dog licks it off too soon, just re-apply. It can't upset it's stomache.

Cheers,
xina.
