Fleas on my little fox terrier
G'day to all ,Our little fox terrier Ellie who now is 13 years old and in great nick and spoilt rotten has started having a flea problem ,she gets a bath about twice a week and in the last two weeks I have noticed 2 or 3 fleas come out of her fur as I am washing her ..I have sprayed her bedding with a flea spray and used medicated shampoo on her but they are still there causing her to scratch a lot ..Can anyone suggest a treatment that is long lasting that works as we hope to be going away after Christmas if all this rain stops and we always take along Ellie for a holiday too..Cheers ..Bob...

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
Bob, we use "fido's flea itch concentrate' works really well but a bit expensive dogs smell great for a few days as well.

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
I use Frontline Plus on mine. Pour it on back of neck once a month.
"Kills Fleas for at least a month--including all Flea stages in the pet's surroundings.
Controls and treats Flea Allergy Dermatitis.
Controls Paralysis Ticks for up to 2 weeks.
Water fast."
It comes in individual dose units, in 3 or 6 month packs. There are packs for Small, Medium, and Large dogs, according to weight.
If you bath her twice a week, you're not helping her. All you're doing is stripping her fur of natural oils etc,. Humans do the same to their own hair these days. All you're doing, is putting unnecessary money in the product manufacturers' pocket.
Cheers, xina.

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
labrat As xina says, Frontline Plus, or I sometimes use Advantage, and dont wash the dog unless really necessary. Twice a week is overkill. Once a month maybe in the summer, only one needed during the winter months, it at all. Check this out. http://www.thevetshed.com.au/index.php/cPath/1_7Cheers Ross

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
dog breeder told us she sprinkles garlic powder onto dog food and has no flea problems - haven't tried it though Once the fleas get into dry dirt or sand they are very difficult to control and re-infect the dog/cat very quickly unless you use a squirt on protection that lasts about a month as in previous replies

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
If she is running on lawn sprinkle some Garden lime on the lawn and water in well. It will knock off most of the fleas but you will still have to use Frontline. Cheers

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
Hi Labrat,
If the dog has access to under the house or even soil in the garden, it is possible fleas are in those areas and the dog can get reinfested by visiting those areas. It is often wise when treating dogs for fleas to deny then access to soil areas to assist the treatment. Sometimes the property needs to be treated by a professional if the problem can not be controled.

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
I have had pig-hunting dogs for many years .
1/3 teaspoon of yellow sulphur in their food 4 or 5 times a week , and they never get fleas or ticks . Ticks are very thick around here too .
A foxy would only a need pinch of sulphur a few times a week .

Re: Fleas on my little fox terrier
Now you know why most dogs greet other by sniffing the rear end. The front end probably smells too bad from all the garlic
