Re: 5W Handheld UHF radio
Just stick to the known brands. Also make sure you can remove the antenna so you attach coax for an external antenna.

Thanks, I'm surprised there are not more Japanese brands on the market... seems GME & Uniden are the most prevalent... nearly only ones out there... rossb

rossb I personally would go with ICOM, as I have used them for just over 20 years, 15 of those was as a Firefighter in the RAAF where our Airfield Emergency Rescue hand-held units were and still are ICOM. Here is a link. http://www.icom-australia.comCheers, PeterM.

Make sure it's fully programable so that it can be updated to the new channel regime in the next few years.

Re: 5W Handheld UHF radio
Hi rossb; As with all hand helds ,and at the 5 watt level your radio is going to chew through the batterys real quick, make sure you also get a good set of HD rechargeable batterys for it. Normal carbon batterys will not last the distance. My little vhf hand held radio chews through its batterys in about 30 min and they are rechargable. One thing to look out for.
