Post Re: Caravan Insurance
Hi Chris, we have a Geist which we found difficult to insure with the 'well known' insurance companies due to its European origins (RACV wont even give us a quote because parts are accessed overseas). Most companies who would insure us quoted > $1100 per year which is way above our budget. we finally approached Elders Insurance as have farm insured with them and they were fantastic. the van is insured for agreed $59000 and costs just over $50 per month. hope this helps with another avenue for you if needed. Cheers Annie

I have just posted on another insurance thread but you may miss it. We had the unfortunate experience of an accident last year. Our tug was written off and we had $28,000 damage to our new van. Our insurer APIA had the car finalised and the cheque in our hands within three weeks and their assessor worked with our repairer of choice and the van was approved within 6 weeks. We ahve asll our insurances with APIA so as they say if you are over 55 and no longer working full time give them a go. Their rates are reasonabe as well. Hope this helps

We have our home, contents, two cars and our caravan with RACV and last year, two days after we left home, we had the misfortune of clipping a car with the tail end of our 25ft caravan while exiting a petrol station, which caused a fair amount of damage to our van as well as to the other car. We found it interesting that we had to claim against our car insurance ($550 excess) for repairs to the other vehicle and were authorised to have repairs carried out on the van to a maximum of $1000, but if it exceeded this amount we would have to make a separate claim on the caravan policy and pay an additional excess of $200. Having phoned around several other insurance companies, we found the RACV to be the most competitive and were very impressed with the claims process which was carried out with a minimum of fuss and inconvenience. We have just sold our Toyota Coaster motorhome and have got quotes for a dualcab plus 13ft caravan were buying to replace the Coaster.
We've been with APIA for nearly 10 years,house/contents, car, motorhome.
Got quote for d/cab $121 dearer than GIO for exactly the same policy.
$97 dearer than GIO for 13ft van.

No second prize for guessing who gets my business.

We went with CIL. We carry expensive camera equipment and other extras that some insurance companies weren't willing to cover. As we didn't have house insurance at the time of travel (only landlords) we couldn't cover the equipment under a household policy.
I tried AAMI as we have a couple of houses and vehicles insured with them but at the time I don't believe they covered vans (??)..... Anyway, MHIA were ridiculously expensive. Most of the other big name insurance companies didn't have van coverage. We haven't need to use the CIL insurance as yet so don't know whether they are good to deal with or not. Touch wood we don't ever need to find out.
Each to their own as we all have very different requirements and you need to shop around.
