How easy is it to find work?
Hi All, We are still in the planning stages of selling up and hopefully travelling on the road for many years to come. We will have a reasonable savings account but it wont last us forever so fully intend to find work to replenish our savings. We are in our 40's. Hubby has lots of manual labouring experience but I only have admin type experience. We are both not fussy and intend to pick up pretty much whatever we can get but want to know just how much work is really out there. Have seen all the harvest trail info but is there other work other than this or will we have to get into large cities to find work other than picking? Your feedback would be much appreciated. Cheers Jo and Mark

We don't work but I have written articles on the subject of funding your travels. There is plenty of works out there for those that really want to work and are innovative about looking for it. Networking is essential - talk to fellow travellers, ask in the pub, check the notice boards and do lots of 'cold calling' If person A has no work ask who else he/she may know that you could contact. Colect good refereces. Don't rely on the phone - present in person with a positive 'can do' attitude. John

From first hand experience last year, forget the fruit & veg picking idea. They don't want Aussies, & certainly not ones our age (40's).
They're after the young French & Korean backpackers (& the like) who will work like trojan horses for very little money.
Also, because of the new working holiday scheme, whereby if a backpacker has worked a min of 3 months on a farm they can then renew their visa for another year, the jobs are scarce.
Follow the Grey Nomad trail, & you'll find heaps of 'Work available' signs. After all, these lucky people need to be serviced.
Ditto for what Frank & Brenda said.
Cheers, Bev

If you know a town or area where you would like to get work, email some of the likely businesses ahead of your arrival. Give a brief resume and see what happens. Worked for me - got work every time I wanted it. OK, I'm a maths teacher and there are not so many of us around, but should also work for other occupations.

Thanks all for your responses. Seems like employment is the same everywhere. If you are prepared to look hard enough then it is there to be found!

hi guys we have been travelling for just over 7 yrs , we class ourselves as permanent tourists . We are 58 and 56 yrs old , i am a motor mechanic and the wife works for woolies . We have never had a problem getting work . One boss told me (early in the peace) .Make sure to turn up on time ,sober and dressed for the occasion (whatever job ) and you will always get work . Also if you want to work at whatever # there IS work , good luck , dont let age or any negatives stop you guys from doing what you want to do and enjoying this most beautiful country of ours ENJOY
