Depending on the nose (towball) weight of your van, an old set of bathroom scales will do the same, if you don't have an old set use the ones out of the bathroom, just don't tell SWMBO. :D :D :D
Place a short bit of timber across the scales and lower the jockey wheel onto it, or for a more acurate reading use another short bit of wood between the towball hitch and the scales.

There is a pic of the set up that Frank described in the Album in my profile.
Simple, reasonably quick and accurate, and a heck of a lot cheaper than $200.

You must have a good set of scales. Mine dont go anywhere near the 300kg that my towball weight is.

You normally use a metre long bit of wood held level and the jockey wheel in the middle and it weighs it at half the actual weight.

Graham, it may be better to use the 2/3 - 1/3 setup with the horizontal beam on the scales.
That would keep the weight lower on the scales scale. (did that make sense ?)

Half way will work, but I prere this way.
If you use the 1/3 - 2/3 method you will register only 1/3 of the total weight on the scales.
Say 80kgs.
You then simply multiply that by 3, to reach the actual weight in the beam........... The Ball Weight.
240kgs

Hi Allwise, In their web page advert, the company says that if there is a caravan rally or similar, they will send a rep to do a demonstration. I asked the organisers of the last Boroma rally at Yamba to do this, but for whatever reason, it did not happen.

I was interested in the unit, but would have liked to see a demo before parting with $$$$$$$. I am not into buggering up our good bathroom scales, so that is out!!!!!!!! A weigh bridge is the only other accurate way to ascertain your ball weight.

Colin.

thanks colin

I know that the weigh bridge will tell me my ball weight and I have had the van and ball weight done whilst empty. Once we load it up. I will get the van weight done again; it cost $27.50 each time I get the weights done. I think you all need to know that weights can change, as such so do ball weights, a simple mistake of forgetting were things should be can end up a costly experience. And I can assure you all as a past paramedic, and a long hall trucker, I have seen many roll overs in my years, and have come to understand how things can go wrong when you least expect it. So for a mere couple of hundred bucks, could save me thousands in the long run, not to mention our lives
