Post New Tug and new van.
Hi all, new to the forum but have been caravaning since 1985. Retired in 2005. New vehicle and van are replacements for the BA falcon wagon and 19'6' tandem Maytow van that were both written of in a "rollover" west of Cairns in early August. New tug is a 04/2007 BF Falcon wagon on dedicated LPG. As with the BA wagon, the new tug will have an extra LPG tank fitted in the rear luggage compartment to boost fuel capacity from 116 ltrs to 180 ltrs. Based on past fuel consumption on the previous rig we would expect a return of 4-5km per litre and a range of between 720 and 900 km. With this fuel capacity, locations that do not have LPG have not caused any problems for us. The new van that is due for delivery in early December is a 19'6" Roma Elegance with shower/toilet and is similar in weight and dimensions to the previous van. This will be our fourth van since 1985.
The dedicated LPG BF Falcon wagon develops 372 nm of torque, the same as the previous BA wagon and I expect it will handle the new van with out any problems. Other modifications to be done to the new vehicle will be the fitting of an extra leaf in the rear springs and the addition of an external transmission cooler.
Adelaide is home when not travelling. We can not wait for the new van and to get back on the road.

Cheers,
Froglet

Who were you insured with froglet and how did things pan out with your claim?

Cheers

Both the car and van were insured with our motoring organisation insurance company, RAA Motor Insurance. Both policies stipulated that the amount insured was the "Agreed Value" or "Market Value"-which ever is highest. For the BA Falcon wagon the agreed value was $1500 above market value and so we accepted a payout based on the agreed value. The caravan was the opposite. The van was a 2002 Maytow 19'6" tandem in excellent condition. Replacement vans of similar age with similar features were priced in Adelaide between $35k and $41k.
Based on market price, the insurance company settled for $11,500 above the agreed value and almost $8,000 above what I paid for the van in 2004. In addition there was a contents claim of almost $900 and on top of that they paid out and additional $475 towards a new "Weight Distribution Hitch" under the car's policy-"Personal Items" section.
On the day of the rollover they organised and paid for three nights accomodation in Cairns and two days hire car whilst we got things organised before we flew home three days after the accident. We were extremely pleased with the payout and how everything was handled.

If I was you, I'd be making a habit of it. How many retirees make money on these trips? Stay safe.
