Post The new Tug.
The old Territory has moved on and has been replaced by a Land Rover Discovery 4.

We are looking forward to the first trip in July.

What was it that convinced you to part with the readies to get a Disco 4? By the way is this the first model under the control of Tata? Are they still made in UK?

The Disco and why....

We looked at few 4WD's anything from Japan or Korea was off the list.

Japan because nothing appealed at all.
Korea because I am not convince they can produce a decent car.

Looked at Jeep the Grand Cherokee is getting long in the tooth.
VW Toureg wife didn't like it.
Audi Q7 I liked it wife didn't
BMW X5 mmmmm well expensive options very average off road.

That left the Discovery 4 or wait for Ford to do a diesel Territory.

Tata & Land Rover....

It would seem Tata have been willing to put money in where Ford wasn't so the Tata thing isn't really a bad thing.

There is nothing on the market price wise that comes close to the new V6 TD engine. 180kw 600nm and it is an awesome thing to drive. The Q7 and VW were the closest.

tata has owned landrover for 2mins and would have nothing to do with the current d4. which it, the d3, range rover sport, new defender, freelander and all the other small updates were all funded by ford and many say ford saved the brand so I don't no where you got the idea ford put no money into the brand they spent billions. 2.7 diesel, 3 diesel, 3.6 v8 diesel, supercharged v8 petrol. as I said billions compared to when bmw owned them they a so far in front of where they were it isn't funny.

I hope the d4 serves you well and it should pull the van with ease as did the d3

also land rover is still made in england not india

Landrover is still made in UK and, from what I read at the time of the takeover, it was part of the deal that Landrover continue ad infinitum to be built in UK.

And Mowog, I like your choice but can't help having a bit of a dig with some of what you have said. You list a range of vehicles and say the BMW is expensive and not much off road and you also mentioned that nothing from Japan or Korea appealed...(provocative...) and Territory still hasn't come out with a diesel. Are you suggesting that the Territory is any better off road that the X5.?? Or the Q7, Toureg..?? It's not.

But the D4 is a fantastic vehicle and better on road than any of the other serious off roaders and just as good off road. I almost bought a D3 but the towing issue in Australia re WDH, which I see you have strong opinions about in another thread, made me re think and perish the thought, I bought a Japanese vehicle which, in the event something goes wrong, I have comfort that 9 out of the 10 vehicles nearby will be of the same make. Gives me a lot of comfort and it's a pretty damned good vehicle as well.

Don.

The Territory Diesel for the dollars it would have cost would have been a good option and I may have considered one if they were on the market. It is not in the same class as the high end euro's. But it isn't a bad thing either.

Japan/Korea...

Nothing from either country even comes close to D4. Show me a a 4WD from either country with a 3.0l TD with 180kw and 600nm backed up by a 6 speed ZF. Mine isn't even run in yet and on a recent weekend trip it returned 9.3L/100 that was a mix of Sunshine traffic crawling and motorway work.

We just did over a 1000klm over the long weekend and it is simply an awesome car to drive powerful economical refined comfortable.

You may enjoy the comfort of the 9 out of 10 factor. But it is a simple truth that the Landcruser is more like a truck than a car to drive.

Mowog,

As I said in my post, I am a fan of the Disco in both 3 & 4 versions, obviously the D4 is an advance on the 3. I drove a D3 both here in UK and it is a good on road vehicle no doubt and of course, extremely capable off road.

The reliability issue is still something that would cause me some concern but the biggy, since you push me to say it..the LC200 is a considerably better tow vehicle for large vans with a heavy TBM, which I have. Now I can't prove that any more than you can prove the LC200 is a 'truck'. Heavy duty yes, but a truck it is not in anybody's language. Have you ever driven one more than a couple of kilometres..., or even driven one at all?? It is actually a very good large vehicle to drive with heaps of low down grunt but no, not as good on road as the Disco..but off road, for all the electronic trickery in the D4, I'd take the 'truck' Toyota, which has it's own share of electronics.

And, on the power front, the LC200 is 4.5l V8, as I am sure you know and delivers 198kw and 650Nm and is very understressed whereas, LR have extracted every ounce out of the 3l V6. I could do the same with a chip and get 240kw and 800Nm which would then put the LC200 engine on a par with the similarly sized European V8 diesels. Toyota always err on the side of conservatism. But frankly, I don't need any more of either power or torque, so won't bother with that and risk warranty issues.

But, I am not trying to start a fight but you have some very strong views and saying or inferring that the D4 is better than anything else frankly, is provocative and not the done thing unless you want to end up like our dear friend Keddy

I didn't say the D4 was better than everything else.

It is better for me and what we do. We don't tow the van a lot and its only a light van for what it is.

Lots of people make safe choices when buying cars you have done that in buying a Toyota. Playing safe following the crowd well thats just plain boring to me. Life is way to short to limited by what everyone else does.

There are certainly some interesting comments in the link above. Primary safety alone is against the Toyota.

The new tug looks great, especially if it is that glorious red one in the picture, but I also tried to look outside the box and bought a Jeep, boy was that a mistake and I have now also erred on the safe side and have a Prado.
Good luck with your discovery.

Hank
