The Powered Jockey Wheel is the brainchild of former Dubbo farmer, Hilary Eric Hanslow. An avid inventor, Hilary heard the plights of clients in his retirement financial planning business and realised there was a need for a back-saving, marriage-soothing jockey wheel to help caravanners manoeuvre their rigs.
The product weighs only 44kg, and is fitted in around an hour to a cross-bar on the A-frame by means of U-bolts. Trailers without a cross-bar can easily have one welded on. Once in place, the Powered Jockey Wheel can push or pull vans up to 5000kg, on a slope up to 6° (for example). The powerful Superwinch motors used for drive and steerage are high efficiency, low-ampdraw permanent magnets that provide mechanical and dynamic braking. This means the PJW will also stop and hold the van, even on a steep slope.
Originally designed for huge trailers and houseboats, the smaller model has a chunky 250mm-diameter wheel with thick tread for plenty of grip. The sealed linear actuators with thrust of over 2200km. Each is fully self-contained, with only the 12V wiring going to them.
