GIVE TRUCKIES A BREAK!

Professional truck drivers refer to RVers as “Wobblers.” They’re referring to way some vans wobble from side-to-side in tow. I think our “wobbling” is one of their least concerns on the long haul. It pays to consider that fully laden trucks travelling at legal speeds take long distances to come to a sudden stop and as their wheels lock up they can “flat spot” their tyres.

When a truck approaches from behind, please don’t slam on the brakes. Braking is unhelpful as it means the truckie may need kilometres to again build up speed to overtake. My approach is to wait until the truck is overtaking and is beside me, and then I’ll de-accelerate. I’ve heard truckies called “rednecks” and cowboys by fellow RVers but that just simply isn’t true. They are governed by strict regulations for road-worthiness and only get paid while their wheels are turning. Truckies are professional drivers who know the road like the back of their hand and above all, both sides of the fence need to remember that the road is there to be shared and avoiding accidents at all costs should be our primary concern.
