Substituting prescription medicine ( Tablets)
Whist in hospital for a couple of days to have an Angiogram The specialist had the Hospital pharmacy fill my Scripts. They gave me all substitutes which I had to ask what they were for, as I had never heard of the brands they gave.
From now on I will be refusing to allow any pharmacy to substitute my Doctor brands on his scripts.
Most chemist ask me if I would like the generic brand.
The answer of course is
NO I do not want generics.
Anyone else having similar issues re tablets.
Jay&Dee
P.S.
All clear with the old ticker. but I now have to take a half a tablet two A DAY
Cannot even pronounce the name let alone spell it.
But the Doc knows best.

Jaydee,we don’t have any issues taking generic prescriptions, they should be equivalent to the branded ones.

Hi there,
We have found that the “Generics” will be covered by the PBS at the “Pensioner Rate ($6-40)”, but some of the “Non Generics” will not.
If you are a Pensioner or have a PBS Card, you may have to pay more for “Non Generics”, which I believe is “Fair Enough”.
Unfortunately the “Health System” is under huge “Financial Pressure” & will only get worse.
Tar Trekka.
Any day above the ground is a great day.

Pleased to hear all was OK with your ticker J.
You can request that your doctor ticked on the prescription form no substitutes. Personally I have no problems taking a generic brand of the same drug, and when I pick up my Blood Pressure prescription each month, the brands and product name vary, but the active ingredients are still the same. If going to a different doctor, I give the drug name rather than the labelled name.
As Tar Trekka says, you if a pensioner or on an eligible concession card, and you are getting medications at the concessional price of $5 or $6, you may be charged a surcharge for a brand name product rather than generic. This can apply even if you don’t request it, when only a brand name is in stock or available at the time.

J&D,
I’m only interested in getting the prescribed active ingredients and don’t give a rat’s about the brand if it is an approved substitute.

Ditto, I’ve lived 33 years on substitute medicines (had my first hearst attack at 30) and I’m still kickin’
As long as it works what’s the difference other than extra $$$ in your pocket
Catch you……Out there

Re: Substituting prescription medicine ( Tablets)
We use generic brands all the time, the only thing i got against them is that even if we go to the same chemist, we sometimes get different brands and packages and i got to be careful not to mix them up.
They have offered us, The Chemist, to make a flatpack with our daily tablets, but i don’t really trust them, what’s to say that some kid doesn’t get the tablets mixed up and it can be hard to tell what they are without the packet.
We use a lot of medicines after 5-6 months we usually get them for free.
By the way, have you got your flu shot?

That is the exact reason I posted this thread, as I get completed mixed up with what is what as chemist shops have different generics.
But may have to change my thinking if there is $$$$$$ savings.
The safety net I think is around $330 odd before we get free medicine. by June/July we should also be on the freebees.

I have no problem with generic, but then again I only take the one daily tablet at around $9.00 per month (too young to get old age discount)
Perhaps if you have a lolly shop try getting your chemist to put then in a Webster Pack?
