We are heading to Tassie for 4 months Dec2013 till end Mar2014.

We have the Camps7 and also Badgers reports etc etc.
Will be doing a mix of C/P’s and freecamping and visiting friends.

Have done all the searching on this site and found very good,,, but it is mostly outdated.

What I am after; if possible, is some newer reports from travellers that are also touring or have just toured the isle and can share some spots you found and recommend.
We do not have a pet this trip as he is now gone onto a different journey.

We were in Tassie earlier this year, there are many, many camping options. Most of your information will be still current. We stayed at the following free and low cost camps – Ulverstone, Penguin, Boat Harbour (Exc), Stanley, Hellyer Gorge, Lake Mackintosh, Strachan Golf Club ($10), Bradys Lake, Lake Pedder, Geeveston, Shipwright Point, Triabunna ($5), Mayfield Beach (VG), River and Rocks Freycinet, Bay of Fires(Exc), StMarys, Kempton ($5 inc power), Deloraine, Lake Barrington, Devonport Coles Bay. We saw lots of others as well, the locals are friendly and generally encourage you to stay.
Tassie was one of our best van trips, you will love it. Enjoy

Four months – what a good time frame .

Don’t forget you can log into the Camps Australia Wide website for updates as you travel. Others you meet in free and low cost camps will share the good places they have been. Despite all the publicity, Tasmania still has so many wonderful camping opportunities.

Expect the coastal campgrounds to be busy during their summer school holidays.

Get your All Parks National Parks Pass while on the Spirit of Tasmania.

That is why we have a caravan

Tasmania was hard – we had two deadlines. One to get to Melbourne on a set day and the other to get back to Devonport on a set day. The rest of it was go where we wanted, when we wanted, and do so to suit the weather.

Our Tasmanian caravanning friends advised us to go to Cradle Mountain on the first fine day there – from where ever we were – it is not far from anywhere in Tasmania. He even said "Today will be good" and it was a beautiful clear sunny day. Others found in shrouded in mist on days that were fine elsewhere.

Hope you enjoy your trip we’ve been in tassie now 10 mths winging it is a great way to do it ,could tell you heaps of good camps ,here’s a few, montague near smithton ,doras point near St Helen’s cockle creek way down south, murtle park near launceston , narriwaptanu spring lawn ,short drive from the boat ,,wherever you go you,ll enjoy ,look out for tiger snakes if in the bush, if your in longford were in the caravan park for a few mths drop in and say hi were site 9

Yes; we have been told that about cradle mountain!
The only thing I have planned or would like to do; is to be at friends in Hobart overlooking the finish line when the Syd/Hobart fleet arrives.
Other than that we wing it. Have some Geist owners etc to see also.

We are so excited for this trip. Been long time on bucket list

Hi All,

I would also like to thank those for info on free camping in Tassie.

We are booked first week in Feb for 5 weeks. We have put of going before due to cost ( 24ft van and 3 of us)
Then we worked out that if we say went to Qld or SA for 5 weeks we would do a lot more klms and probably not free camp as much. Tassie appears to have a lot more free camping and I don’t think we will be doing as many klms towing the van around to balance out the cost.
Anyway, that is how I convinced myself re cost on ferry with car, van & cabin etc.Am excited just thinking about it, except the sea sickness bit.

All the answers above are all great help, we are also lucky in having friends (locals) down there so that helps. Ken & Lyn from Hobart stayed at our place when up in Brisbane and highlighted our Tassie map with all the "must" sees.
