Can anyone tell me what the above road is like and if a 4X4 towing a 21 foot caravan would cope with the above trip. We are going on the 4th of March and down to Bruthen and back to Albury before coming home to Orange NSW.

We are currently in that area now, have been to Tumbarumba,Myrtleford,Albury, right now in Glenrowan. We went to Tallangatta last year and had no trouble and will be there again this year.The area is quite hilly in places and providing your van and tow vehicle are appropriately matched you will enjoy the experience.

On the way, you could drop in to Lake Dartmouth (not literally)

It’s a STEEP low gear climb all the way from Harrietville to the top of Mt Hotham and then somewhat easier down into Omeo.
Fabulous scenery and well worth the trip.

Thanks we have a Dmax and a Jayco Starcraft 21 ft and I am sure it will go most places. Last year we went to Bright for a couple of days before we went off to follow the Murray to its source which was great but we only had 4 weeks and of course it was far too short. If all goes well we may go off on a gap year later this year and proceed around Australia for the full 12 months before we move permanent from Orange NSW to Toowoomba QLD. I am sure we will enjoy this next trip and it will make it harder to go home but it will now be a research trip to find out what we would need to do longer trips in the future. About 50 kms from Tallangatta (on the way to Omeo) take Dartmouth Road, well before you get to Mitta Mitta.

EDIT: Forgot to say there is a caravan park at Dartmouth.

If you intend free camping there is a good spot at Anglers Rest. Plenty of room and right beside the river. [Camps 6: 123].

We travel over the omeo to Tallangatta Rd.3 to 4 times a year,it is sealed all the way you will have no problems.We are going over on the 4th of March but coming the other way.
The road ozjohn mentioned is the great alpine road,from Bright to Omeo,thru Mt. Hotham,totally different Rd.There are some great free camps to stay so don,t rush.
Mitta Mitta CP. is a good spot to stay ,right on the river,do a day trip to Dartmouth.
Dartmouth CP is not on the water,but the dam and surrounding area is worth a look.
mitta pub is good for meals and worth a look.
Free camps, Walnuts, Lightning creek, Big River Camp,Joker Flat, Anglers Rest.
Jokers Flat and Anglers Rest are in a Nat.Park so no dogs,All have drop toilets and are besides mountain steams.
Will post photos if you want,and will keep a lookout for you on the way.
We have a Prado towing a Coromal Magnum.
If you have a U.H.F. keep it on, the logging trucks,if you happen to come across one usually tell you where they are,they say South 26 or what ever.So you Know he is heading south at the 26 klm. post,
