Can anybody please help me. I am trying to work out the volume of a piece of PVC pipe in litres.
Tried Google & it totally confused me. I have a piece of PVC pipe 150 dia that is 2.2 mrts long. How many ltrs would this hold please. If you could advise the way it’s calculated for my future reference I would appreciate it.

The pipe area is Pi x Radius Squared. Use Centimetres, thus 3.142 x 7.5 x 7.5 = 176.7 square centimetres.

So that is the area of the circle being the end of pipe. Now multiply that by the length of the pipe in centimetres, thus 220 x 176.7 = 38,882 cubic centimetres.

Now 1 cubic centimetre = 1 millilitre, so divide 38,882 by 1000 to get litres = 38.882

This assumes that your 150 mm is the internal diameter of the pipe.

From my school days Max it would be Pi*rsquared*length of pipe

So 3.141 * 75 * 75 * 2.2 in millilitres

or roughly 39 litres

OGF…. in my haste to assist I forgot about my shorthand method I figured a few years ago.

Instead of farting about with Pi and the radius, just remember that the area of a circle is a tad over 78% of a square drawn around it.

So think of your 15 cm pipe as a 15 cm square, then the area is obvious as 15 x 15 = 225. Then just take 78% = 225 x 0.78 = 175.5 square cms.

Then of course multiply by the pipe length to get volume.

Close enough for most things

Rather than worry about pi and all that stuff, there are plenty of on line calculators Google will pull up. If you are calculating the volume of the interior, of course be sure to use to interior not exterior diameter.

Maybe in Mexican schools that may have been the case. In NSW schools all our physics anc chemistry classes used metric calcs, even though it was the CGS system. The only conversion I have done was to convert to the MKS (now SI.)

A tip for those working out volume, convert your dimensions to decimetres and the result comes out in litres.
