I saw it as well and have seen it on a forum recently, if I was the trucky I think I would have parked right in the middle of them and leave the fridge motor running if he had one. There would be a problem when they wanted to leave, with the truck parked in the middle. Cant believe how incosiderate some people are.

I pulled into the Yelgiun rest area recently. At Yelgun there is a designated area for caravans and an area for trucks. When I pulled up there was only one other van in the caravan area and at least four caravans set up in the truck area. These guys set up in the truck area made total pigs of themselves not only for parking in the truck area but by unhiching and setting up in such a way that they took up a lot more room than they needed. By morning the place was clockers and looked like the photo above. Unfortunatly some caravaners can be very selfish giving us a bad name.

Also look at the road direction arow in the photo and note which way the cars with caravans are facing.

My thoughts are with the truckies. We are on the road full time and I occasionally do escort duty shifting large machinery around our highways. I have experienced some absolutely selfish, stupid and dangerous acts by some motorists including fellow caravanners.

The example shown above is typical of the selfishness of some people. What it does highlight though is the shortage of rest areas available for both truckies and other road users.

The Pacific Highway in NSW has recently had restrictions involving rest areas. This has only worsened the shortage of overnight resting. These restrictions are enforced by some money hungry local councils. These councils often have vested interest in local caravan parks owned by the councils, councilors or financial supporters come election times.

The demand is obviously there for the RTA or RMS to produce many more rest areas to satisfy the needs of both the commercial and travelling public. Adverts telling us to Stop, Revive and Survive are constantly on TV. Placing restrictions on rest areas has indeed raised safety issues and seem to be at odds with these safety messages.

I have to agree with Hank but i think there is a camper van there to
if is for truck only what is wrong with blast on the horn at about 2 in
the morning or when they leaving that would fix them.

Looks like its time to do two things. Provide more parking for all, and start booking the caravans owners a couple of hundred a night…..

Yelgun is listed as a combined car, caravan and truck rest area. While the caravan sites are limited to only four, perhaps the signage isn’t clear. The description on Caravanning News is the only one I have seen that points out there are divisions, wihtout any mention of how limited the caravan places are. Coming in late, these caravanners may have just seen someone was already parked and without noticing the signs, think as caravans were there it was the correct place to go.

Other listings do not mention restrictions with descriptions like "A large area with plenty of room".

Anyone planning their journey would be counting on "a large rest area away from the highway" from internet research.

While nobody should take the spaces allocated to heavy haulage, it appear that this is a long term issue not helped by the publicity on so many camps listing websites which indicate plenty of room and do not mention that there are only four caravan places.
