Friday, 28th January 2011

Hook point is accessible two to three hours either side of low tide. The creeks are currently running very fast. Beach driving is good. The inland tracks are pretty good at the moment and the Inland track from Hook Point is reasonable at the moment.

The toilets at Lake Birrabeen will be closed from 1 February to 15 April inclusive for a site upgrade. There are still quiet a few road closures on Fraser and you should check the conditions report before you travel (www.derm.qld.gov.au/fraser and click on conditions report).

Sandy Cape turtle rookery seasonal vehicle restriction commenced on 15 October - Vehicles are prohibited on the beach between South Ngkala Rocks and Sandy Cape Lighthouse between the hours of 6 pm and 6 am, from 15 October to 30 April each year

Double Island Point

Travelling up Teewah Beach to Rainbow is reasonable driving; care should be taken when driving along the beach due to washed up marine debris from recent flooding in south-east Queensland. Driving around Mudlo rocks and across the front of Rainbow Beach is not recommended at the moment and access to Teewah Beach should be done through Freshwater Track.

Freshwater Track is reasonable at the moment. The Eastern firebreak (Pettigrews Rd) remains closed.

From 17 October 2010 vehicle permits are required to access the beaches and some tracks in the Cooloola Recreation Area. For more information check the QLD government website at www.derm.qld.gov.au/cooloola

Travelling up Teewah Beach to Rainbow is reasonable driving. Driving around Mudlo rocks and across the front of Rainbow Beach is not recommended at the moment and access to Teewah Beach should be done through Freshwater Track.

Freshwater Track is very rough due to the increase in traffic using it and care should be taken when using this track. The western fire break on Kings Bore Rd has water covering it in sections again you should check depth before driving through and access to the beach is very steep and not recommended for anyone towing a trailer.

Hook point is accessible three hours either side of low tide, and getting better. Other than high tide times beach travelling is good. Beach conditions are fantastic at the moment; Yidney Rocks are currently exposed and are passable at low tide or by using the bypass. Eli and Maheno beach camping grounds are due to re-open from Boxing Day 26th December 2010.

Inland tracks are reasonable at the moment.

Double Island Point

Travelling up Teewah Beach to Rainbow is reasonable driving. Currently, Mudlo rocks are only passable one hour either side of low tide, the rocks are exposed and should really only be done at your own risk. The conditions at the Sticks, near Leisha Track, are okay, passable about one hour either side of low. Some sticks that have been covered have become exposed again. There is a hole in front of “the sticks”, it can be driven through at low tide. There is a track through “the sticks” behind the hole which is okay most of the time. There are landslides between the rocks and the lagoons and it is best to use the Freshwater track to access these areas

From 17 October 2010 vehicle permits are required to access the beaches and some tracks in the Cooloola Recreation Area. For more information check the QLD government website at www.derm.qld.gov.au/cooloola
