This came via email. checked it on the internet with snoopes (ifishalot)

The Moon does an 18.6 year cycle.

A super moon is a new or full moon which occurs when the moon is at 90% or greater of its closest perigee approach to the earth.

An extreme super moon is when the moon is a new moon or full moon and is at 100% or greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth.

1954 Floods
There was an extreme super moon at full moon on November 10 1953.
Flooding occurred from October 1953 to 23 February 1954

1974 Floods(approx. 18-19 years later)
There was an extreme super moon at full moon on January 8th 1974.
3 weeks of rain up to 29 Jan 1974.

1992 floods (18-19 years later)
There was an extreme super moon at full moon on Jan 19 1992.

2011 Floods (18-19 years later).

There are super moons at full moon on 18/2/2011, 19/3/2011 and 18/4/2011.
And There is an extreme super moon on the full moon of the 19/3/2011

I guess this is why they are predicting 6/7 cyclones this year????????

I hope everybody has a snorkel!!

In the bush some belive that it won't rain on a cresent moon, when the end of the moon is high enough to catch the rain and fill the moon with water, the problem is if it is raining you can't see the moon.

I have a friend in another state who does moon planting charts
she also says whats happening with the moon and tides /weather and what to expect etc ,
so far she has been right with saying very similar to two ringers

when she does the next months I will see if its ok to pop it here and you can see for yourself what she says

So ... keeping my boat at home rather then away in storage, and possibly renaming it Ark, could be a good thing? I am taking bookings. 8-)

An interesting topic Dave, but the theory has a few flaws.

It is a known fact that the moon has as much of a gravitational effect on the atmosphere as it does on the oceans. When the moon is at perigee it creates a pronounced drop in temperature due to a bulge in the atmosphere and lower temperatures mean less rain - not flooding rains.

The dates you have listed showing the moon at perigee are correct and the following figures will give some idea of how close the moon will be on these dates.

18.03.2011 - 358047 kms

19.03.2011 - 356624 kms

18.04.2011 - 358197 kms

The "fly in the ointment" here is that on 10.11.1953 the distance was 390607 kms which is getting close to the maximum from earth.

January 8th 1974 it was close at 356552 kms and 19.01.1992 it was 356661 kms.

As I type this, the moon is 373857.2 kms away. The same time yesterday it was 368662.3 kms and at this time tomorrow it will be 379254.4 kms. This shows the large variation on a daily basis.

Also interesting to note that the moon was at perigee on 10.12.1981 at a distance of 357022 kms - this was one of our worst ever drought years.

Geez Diesel!!!
Is there no end to your knowledge????
But I agree...full of flaws...what about the 56 floods in Vic/NSW...where was the moon then?....What height were the tides at the time of the floods??
Bit like the 52 card theory when J.F.K. was assassinated. Statements taken as fact but when one investigates, heaps of flaws or incorrections.

Makes good reading though.

A pet theory of mine is that when Lake Eyre fills, it causes much higher rainfall in the East due to the huge amount of evaporation.....Our weather basically comes from the West...be interesting to correlate flood events here in Qld and NSW...with Lake Eyre and Channel Country flooding.

G'day Jock,

I've been into astronomy for many years (more a star gazer) and I use a software program on the laptop that gives me an incredible amount of info including the exact distances to not only the moon but also all the planets and many thousands of stars. The program can be set to give info for any day between 1,000 BC and 4,000 AD.

Provided I know the latitude and longitude coordinates as well as altitude, I can set the program to display a view of the sky from any position on earth. Living in a place like Sapphire provides some fantastic star gazing during the winter months.

I also subscribe to your theory on the evaporation of water from Lake Eyre - for every megalitre of water that evaporates it creates a megalitre of rain somewhere else. The evaporated water rises to the jet stream, moves east and quite often condenses into rain over the eastern seaboard - unfortunately a lot of it is dumped at sea and not over the catchment areas, but then the whole cycle starts again with wet season rains in the tropics coming from evaporated sea water.

G'day Rainy,

My wife is the gardener in our family and she also plants and harvests according to the moon phases.

I often strip naked, smear myself with goose sh#t and dance about screaming ancient viking battle calls on a full moon - it is invigorating especially mid winter when the temp drops below zero.
