$50K ish what to buy
The wife and I are looking at trading our VW LT35 motorhome van in for caravan. We would like something around the 17_ 20 foot range with shower and toilet. The Coromal Element looks decent but I know that are a lot more manufacturers on the east coast. So what are your recommendations? 4wd would be nice but is likely above our price range. Thanks for your advice

Hi Squeaka good luck with your search. We have a Coromal Element 612 and apart from a few minor problems we are happy with it.The Coromal warranty and dealerships took care of these issues. We are on the road full time and are glad of the extra weight we can carry. We have met quite a few fellow Element owners on the road and all have positive comments to make.Take you time in choosing your next van $50,000 is a lot of money spend it wisely. Bill Hi Bill Thanks for the reply. The 612 is exactly what I was looking at. How do you find it for 2 people is there enough room to move, storage, etc. ?

Hi Squeaka, Are you looking new or secondhand? If new, as well as the Coromal, there is Jayco (with great warranty and dealer network around Oz), plus heaps more. Try and get to your local caravan show - the range will astound you! The Starcraft fits your bill and they are in the $40s new. There will be a lot of near new Sterlings comoing onto the market now the new release Jayco Silverline is here. Great bargains to be had! Cheers, Sally

Cheers, Sally Hi Sally We're not locked in to new or 2nd hand, the budget and van size are important so we'd naturally like the best bang per dollar. I'm in the initial research stage, we won't buy until this time next year. I'm kinda geeky about researching as many options as possible when I outlay large chunks of hard earned

Hi Squeaka we find the Element is big enough for us with no shortage of space to pack things away, mind you we have learned to be frugal with what we carry. Good hunting. Bill

HI Squeaka, No worries, thanks for the repely. That's a nice situation to find yourself in! Good luck with the search - the caravan shows are great for seeing what you want/need, etc. I reckon a near new, secondhand van is the go. Better value and might have some additions on it too. Anyway, up to you guys....all the best! Sally

Near new would be perfect for us, someone else who has worked out the bugs and sorted the van

Re: $50K ish what to buy
Squeaka, because you have time on your side I would think about organising a trip over to one of the big east coast caravan shows. The one at Caulfield (Melb) around March-April comes to mind. That way you can look at all the East Coast van manufacturers in the one spot. Shout yourselves a weekend trip over and it will be well worth it. And if you are smart you could make an appointment or two with some Melbourne real estate agents and say you are looking at investment properties (that should make the trip tax deductible). By then you will have your ideal van in mind and an exact shortlist of what you’re looking for. With the greatest range and all the vans basically in on spot you can compare properly.
Good luck with your quest.
Cheers, ALLAN

Re: $50K ish what to buy
No more shows at Caulfield in March. The show has been moved to the Show Grounds and will be in early February. Reckon it was hot in March, they'll cook in early February. For under $50K you'll have a reasonably good choice of quality brands it you're willing to barter hard, and a massive choice of some very ordinary brands. The used market is offering some really fabulous buys at around $39K - $43K for 2 -3 year old vans in as new condition, especially for private sales. Ozjohn.
