Darwin- Things to do and day trips to take

Heading to Darwin for a week at the end of June-start of July 2017.

Since we only have a week, we are flying to Darwin and will stay in one of the motels in town.

As we will not have our 4WD, we will be looking at taking day trips, either by hiring a car or going on paid day trips.

My question is, what are some good things to do in Darwin and organised trips to go on.

Also, should we hire a 4WD or should a normal car be able to do most things in and around Darwin?

I liked thses tunnels, but the mrs wasn't that impressed.

Australian Aviation Heritage Centre near the airport.

Fanny Bay Gaol.

And of course Mindil Beach market.

Yep the tunnels were great and there a pictures all along the rout of great interest too. (in the tunnels).

We went to the crock jumping , spotting, on a boat out past the Humpty Doo hotel. Thy have crock burgers you can try if you like faintly tasting flavorless chicken.

Litchfield park is a longer way out but some nice views at Wangi falls camp ground.
The park is approximately 120km south-east from Darwin via Batchelor on a fully-sealed road.
It is also accessible during the Dry Season via Cox Peninsula Road, which has some unsealed sections, and the 4WD Reynolds Track from Daly River Road in the south.

Google Darwin Tourism, this should give you a very comprehensive lost of what is available. A bus trip to Kakadu that includes lunch and a trip up the gorge was a good way to spend a day for us - we saw plenty of wild crocs

We also found that feeding the wild fish at ?? Cove was a highlight for the wife. There is also a hop on hop off bus to some places of interest

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory at Bullocky Point is very good. Among lots of other stuff it includes the Cyclone Tracy exhibit and entry is free.

The Defence of Darwin exhibit along with the East Point Military museum was also good, the same entry fee covers both.

Consider saving a day or two car hire, and booking a place on the Hop On Hop Off bus which takes you to main tourism sites in Darwin, and you can stop at which ever ones you choose. http://www.tourismtopend.com.au/accommo ... orer/63492

We did not take this tour, but it looks like a good way to see a variety without the worry of navigating you way around unknown roads, and finding parking.
