Discount Fuel at Dunmarra

Post by glanyard » Thu Aug 08, 2013 4:08 pm

For Nomads still out on the road in NT, the Dunmarra Roadhouse has discount fuel.
If you are a pensioner you get 5% off, if you stay at the adjacent caravan park you get 5% off and if you buy more than $50 worth of fuel there is another 5% off; making a total of :D 15%!!
Made me happy in July when we were there.

I forgot to tell you all about the pies at Dunmarra.
They really are home made and if you leave too early in the morning you'll miss out. They come fresh out of the oven at about 7.30-8.00 @ $4.50 each.

I nearly got my head punched in at Dunmarra many years ago.
I pulled up out front, night time, to get some fuel and left the mate to attend to filling the ute whilst I ambled inside to grab a beer or three.
Came out with the beer and found the ute was still on the driveway, mate nowhere to be seen, so I got in the cab to move the ute, started it up and next second I have this enraged ringer trying to drag me out of the ute, going to kill me for stealing his ute.
Fortunately the mate turned up, real big bloke, he and the ringer had a bit of a wrastle outside whilst I quickly glanced around the ute. No rifle, few other minor things not there and then I realised it was the wrong ute.
By this time the mate was sitting on the ringer whilst I extricated myself from the cab and handed them both a beer each from the handful that I had brought out.
Seems as though the mate had moved my dray off the pump immediately after filling and the ringer had rolled in right behind him with an identical ute. White XT Falcon.
All mates and half pissed within the hour as the funny side came out. Frightened the bejasus out of me for a moment though. He was a woolly looking bugger was the ringer, half his choppers missing and wild eyed. Civilisation to him would have been Dunmarra.
No tourists to speak of back then and Dunmarra was a very different place. Around 1969 as I recall.

Take it easy.

SD :D
Let's do a three sixty and get out of here !

First time I went through Dunmarra was when I was about 15, so around 35 or so years ago. About the only thing I remember was there had been a song written about the place.

The song was probably about Dan O'Mara who went missing many, many years ago.
The black trackers could not pronounce his name properly so they referred to him as "Dunmarra"!
Or so the story goes.

Its obviously about someone who was local.
Some of the lines of the song, as best as I can remember, go--

If your ever in Dunmarra....

And I hope it wont be long.......

He is half the population, so he wont be hard to find..........
