Soft Close WC Seat Repair

Post by masterplumber » Fri Jun 23, 2017 5:35 pm

Hi all,
the soft close function on one of our WC seats has ceased to work.

I don't really wish to buy a complete new seat, but the hinges don't seem to be available as a spare part.

The mechanism was filled with a substance thay has similar viscosity to vasaline but is sticky, and must be compatible with plastic and O rings.

I had initially thought of glycerine , but it is too fluid.

Did try O ring grease but it is not sticky and did not provide the required resistance.

Have thought of honey but the stuff in our pantry is too fluid and I don't wish to attract ants.

Any ideas?

Regards

It's like silicone that hasn't set.

Perhaps a specialty silicone type of compound?

I was thinking that....
What about an expanding foam ?
Would that be flexible enough or would it set semi-solid......?

Hi Gerry,
Many years ago I had trouble with my Landcruiser viscous cooling fan not fully engaging and was able to buy a product to add to the fan body which was just like thick honey. Its consistency was say similar to two part Araldite just after mixing part A and B not 5minutes later.
I am not sure if it was actually a Toyota product but purchased it from a place in Newcastle called All Four x 4 Spares.

Chain saw chain lubricant is usually thick but may still not be thick enough.

‘O’ rings are usually made of neoprene so the ‘O’ ring will not be affected but cannot say about the plastic.

P.S. just seen OT's post looks promising.

Thanks for the site link OT, I came accross it while following a similar thread on a US plumbing site.

Found a couple of similar sites in Oz, but to buy the quantities that they market is around $600.00.

Had a look at the Jaycar site as what I think I really need is that silicone stuff that is inside Scotch-locks.

Same sticky sort of stuff.

It is damned wrong to have self closing toilet seats.

I mean do you see any self opening toilet seats? Come the revolution comrades..... :)
I now have to note that I cannot accept owners ship, truth, quality, or veracity, of articles I may quote off the internet.
