Thanks OT,
The trucks usually sit in channel 40, and most caravanners still use the lower channels. It would have been a pity to have to chuck out my old set.
I now have to note that I cannot accept owners ship, truth, quality, or veracity, of articles I may quote off the internet.

CH 40 for my priority channel. I have never had a caravanner call me that they wanted to overtake even though CH 40 is displayed in 150 mm letters. Trucks rarely do but that is normal.

So does OT's note in the OP mean we can keep and operate legally our existing 40ch UHF ?
I have 2 x 40ch and they work well to suit their purpose.

Are 80ch still the top end equipment, or is that to be phased out in the near future and replaced with a newer/upmarket system ?

Unless the channel 1 to 40 on the new 80'channel units are a different frequency. I can't why would you need to chuck out the old.
Just meens that people with 80 channels have more to play with

Are we allowed to use CB radios?

We are not allowed to use mobile phones.

If you are talking about when driving, yes, UHF is a driving aid.
