Re: TEMORA MUSEUM WAR BIRDS DOWNUNDER
Glanyard,
I do not recall Oakey having a museum back then.
As I recall it had a Pommy CO whose main interest was Koala spotting or so a few of the blokes told me at the time.
I was a Tech Rep for the Govt Aircraft Factories back then and used to divide my time between Fish Bend and Avalon when not visiting some less than salubrious places overseas.
All too long ago to be of any real relevance to the topic I guess. I tend to avoid museums of any sort these days just in case I am taken for an exhibit on the loose.
I shall return to my musings in the corner with the redbacks.
Take it easy.

When was "back then"; I transited on their aircraft during the late 70's and early 80's.
My main purpose in life in those days was hand held aerial photography from 1000 to 15000 ft.
Our cameras had "filem" in them.

Glanyard,
It would have been the mid 70s. Not saying there wasn't a museum, just do not recall seeing one.
Not that I explored the base much. Busy looking at Cessna 180s and rounding up some spares.
I flew up there from Melbourne and grabbed a hire car at Brisbane and drove out to Oakey, stayed in a local motel if my memory serves me right.
One of the crew went up and collected the chosen Cessna 180 at a later date.
Take it easy.

Re: TEMORA MUSEUM WAR BIRDS DOWNUNDER
Hans,
Due to financial constraints, we had to improvise.
We could do that sort of photography from 15000 ft in a Pilatus Porter.
We rigged the 35mm Pentax SLR with a 500 mm lens and mounted it to a tripod but between the legs. The legs were lashed down to the floor with cord and we shot down through the air delivery hatch; "bomb doors".
We wore two sets of uniform, balaclava, gloves and oxygen mask. We renamed the aircraft an "F111 Porter" because at the time 6 Sqn RAAF was the recce sqn and they were flying F111s but were more expensive to run. Film processing was carried out in the back of a self modified Land Rover.
Actually it was a fun time.

Re: TEMORA MUSEUM WAR BIRDS DOWNUNDER
Glanyard,
Sounds like "fun". I imagine the Porter would have moved about a bit low down in turbulence making life a wee bit difficult.
I worked with a few ex Army Porter drivers over the years, they all sang the praises of the aircraft.
The Pratt and Whitney PT6 engine fitted is a very reliable power plant, it made the Porter as it has the PC12 used by the RFDS.
I spent some time at the Pratt and Whitney training school in Montreal, I went from the middle of an Oz summer to a Montreal winter, thought I had taken enough warm clobber, got that wrong.
Take it easy.
