I know this is a bit long since the original post was done but here's an update.
We were also advised not to stop at Wilcannia but glad we did. A couple of K out on the Dubbo side is a new caravan park on a farm, it is great, very clean and friendly. The BP off the main road is cheaper and fine. On the way to the BP the little shop on the corner across from the cops shop has great platters for lunch.
At the caravan park the owners put on nibbles for happy hour and at times have soup for $2 and money goes to RFDS.
In Broken Hill we liked the tourist park and was fine. Stay about 5 nights as a base to do BH and Silverton.
