Googs Track and CSR Part One
The often unknown "Googs Track" runs due north from Ceduna, through desert country to the "The Transcontinental Australian Railway line". The longest straight rail line in the world. The line goes through barren Nullarbor plains from Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie Goog cut off a lot of miles with his track and there is a memorial to him on the track. All the clips are pics from different members in our group and I give others credit for quite a few of the pics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJI2dW8 ... e=youtu.be

Terrific photos Paul & Trudy. What was most common cause of punctures? Any tyre prove to be outstandingly good? Any prove to be outstandingly bad? thanks Graham

Re: Googs Track and CSR Part One
Hi rip. Mine were the worst, Coopers, I destroyed 6 on just one trip. About 8 other vehicles had 5 different types. Pro comp, wrangler etc all good. We banned Bf Goodrich as the carcasses showed the steel matting after hard work. Most punctures were side wall damaged, and we all had the same pressures in the same terrain. Then we banned Coopers. I actually destroyed the lot and only got one back on warranty. I never ever bought another thing from that ARB mob again. It is all documented in writing and ARB didn;t stand by me after spending $12000-00 with them outfitting the truck. The thing with tyres for this work is they must be able to take the load in the conditions and we often did expedition 4 wd driving cross country. And always overloaded. If you traverse the Madigan line you really want the best tyres. But you will get flats occasionally in all of them...

Re: Googs Track and CSR Part One
I would like to know how these tyres were maintained, as I am on my 6th set of Cooper ST's. We have done both of the tracks mentioned, plus many others including several of Len Beadell's tracks without any problems with the Cooper tyres.
I know there are the knockers of Coopers, but as I said I have had no problems. Look after them and use correct pressures, and you should be okay with most brands.
regards, Geoff.

Re: Googs Track and CSR Part One
Hi Geoffsa, Maintenance didn't come into it as around 15000 to 17000 klm on one trip is not a maintenance issue. I have written "Most punctures were side wall damaged, and we all had the same pressures in the same terrain. The thing with tyres for this work is they must be able to take the load in the conditions and we often did expedition 4 wd driving cross country. And always overloaded."
That is just what happened to me, in the terrain I travelled with the vehicle I drove. It is the truth and believe me I tried to have it not happen and avoid any flats. One tyre had 17 plugs in it eventually bursting an internal side wall due to a sharp rock. We let them down from 16 on rare occasion to 30 psi in the conditions and though it may seem low, yo had to be there to appreciate the conditions. The trip along the Transcontinental is often at 40 kph max as the rocks are similar to oyster sea side sharpness. At least 4 tyres were damaged and we phoned to Kalgoorlie for replacements to be awaiting. They came from Perth. One vehicle suffered total rim failure due to an alloy rim cracking. We beat two steel rims back into shape to fix the rim edge. I am thinking you may never had this incredible experience, but it happens if the terrain is tough enough. But, of all the things that went wrong if tyres are the problem it is a small matter in the scheme of things.
Let me say when I changed to the pro comps it bought me back to the field, and I had no more problems than any one else on other trips. These trips can be just too tough for some tyres, that's all I can say.
