Road conditions Margaret River to Hyden (Wave Rock)

Post by dlhowes47 » Wed Mar 19, 2014 9:52 am

Hi there fellow Nomads,

Has anyone towed a van from the Margaret River area to Hyden (to see Wave Rock) and on to Ravensthorpe? What route did you choose and what are road conditions like?

Also, does it sound realistic (weather-wise) to plan a trip across the Nullabor beginning of May, spend time around the Margaret River area before heading back across the Nullabor via Hyden in time for wild flower season (August/September)?

Cheers

Hi Nomads

Choose the towns from many options Margaret River to Hyden on good sealed roads. Do you specifically want to go to Ravensthorpe and Esperance? While the south coast is not to be missed, you may be coming that way. The Hyden to Norseman Road is a good dirt road with lots of interesting features including rocks with wave faces, and great campsites.

June July August is winter in the South West and if we are lucky, you may get some wet weather, particularly near to coast like Margaret River. It is also the best time to see the south west while it is green and pretty rather than dry and drab as most see it in summer. The Walpole/Denmark area is well worth spending a while touring.

Let me know if you would like to know more about any of these.

We are leaving in a week or so and going to Perth by train, 6 days in Perth then touring in a hire car to Margaret River then over to Albany. So excited, never been to WA before. Still haven't worked out what way to go from Albany back to Perth. Have to do it in one day. Any thoughts?

Quickest way is the Albany Highway Mally, but you will usually meet roadworks at some stage to slow you down, so leave plenty of time to catch your train or plane back home. Enjoy the beauty of the south west. With the good winter rain it is green and at its best.

We did the same thing this time last year Mally. Spent 11 days in the SW corner, from Perth to Hyden, then to Esperence, then around the coast and back up to Perth. Go see Leeuwin Point, and climb the lighthouse. Its well worth the cost for the views. We did the IP both over and back from Sydney. Had a great time. Free rum.

Road from Hyden to Ravensthorpe is all bitumen, good road. Roads to Hyden are also bitumen from Dumbleyung to Hyden is also good. Lake Dumbleyung was where Donald Campbell set the Water Speed record in the 60's I think. Good council run park but heaps of free camps through the area.
Lovely little caravan park at Ravensthorpe albeit dirt sites as are most in inland Australia. If you have time head down to Hopetoun. South of Ravensthorpe, good roads. Caravan park just before Hopetoun is new and in good condition. Probably a couple of kilometres before the town. Take your time as many of the entrances to the properties are proof that some farmers in Western Australia have a lot of spare time on their hands. Some wonderful Farm Art. Check out the full size truck hanging off a cliff edge on the Hyden to Ravy road. Wonderful part of Australia. The colour of the beaches in South Western Australia must be seen to be believed.
When you come out go via Esperance. The boat trip out of Espy to the islands is spectacular but the drive through the Le Grande National Park is unforgettable. To see Lucky Bay and the colour of the water and the whiteness of the sand will stay with me forever. DON"T HURRY.

No, no problem with it. I have about 10 different drinkers at home here, and probably around 150 in the collection. Well, I suppose I do have a problem with it. Not enough money to add more to my collection.
