If you are wanting to see the Rockhampton area properly, go to a caravan park.
However there is a very good freedom park at St Lawrence, by donation. Well worth the visit.

there is a new free camp in Rocky. Cant give you detailed directions, but apparently its on the old Port Alma Road and by all accounts fairly primitive...

Could it be this one? Washpool Lagoon, Port Curtis http://www.poidb.com/poi/location.asp?poiid=135763

On a six month trial from September 2013. No facilities.

You could try the free camp at Bouldercombe beside the pub (who do good meals) with the Lions park accross the road with BBQ's and tables. 20 minutes to Rocky on the Burnett highway. You could call in and see us too. Bonus.

The Woolwash is about the only place I can think about. Primitive is an understatement. Port Curtis Rd, as shown above, is actually the old Bruce Hwy. It runs past the original site of the Tropic of Capricorn spire- (the present site of the Capricorn Spire, and associated tourist centre) is actually no where near the Tropic of Capricorn. There are absolutely NO FACILITIES in the area. The bonus is its only about 5km from Rockhampton.

The site is sandwiched between the old highway, and the Woolwash Lagoon. The strip of land is no more than 10-15 metres wide. Its unkempt, rough, and sometimes littered with rubbish. The old highway is, or was, used at times as a dragstrip, and is still used by some of the locals for a bit of overenthusiastic motoring.

The road can get very busy, as it does serve as a shortcut into Rockhampton, especially during the recent roadworks associated with the new bridge where traffic on the southern outskirts of Rocky was a nightmare during peak times.

About the only place I can think of other than this would be Yaamba, about 40 or so km north of Rocky on the highway.

I think that Woolwash is the place.I got that info secondhand at Christmas time. As Bundy says it is the old Bruce Hwy. The person that gave me the info was decidedly unimpressed...
