Free Camping with a Camper Trailer

Post by BennyT50 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 3:21 pm

Do you see many camper trailers in at free camping spots?

We have a camper trailer and want to start the free camping lifestyle, but are unsure of the ability of sites to free camp with the trailer. I notice that alot of the road side stops would not be suitable for us, but just wanted the opinion of this forum.

Any idea on it, what to do and not to do, as well as the safety of leaving it during the day to go exploring.

Is it the type where you have to put pegs into the ground Benny? In Camps Australia Wide they use, where suitability is known, a symbol representing a camper trailer for this reason.

Security would depend on where. In or close to larger or notorious towns, leaving it set up may not be a good idea. Out in the bush miles from anywhere, very little risk. Remove all valuables, eg cash, cameras, laptops, and take them with you in the car.

Motherhen,

It is free standing, but in strong winds I do put a few pegs in.
To open flaps etc to act as an awning, poles and ropes are needed.

I dont reckon you'd have a problem at all Benny. Have seen many campertrailer set-ups in free camps. In fact, if you're towing it with a 4WD, there's many places you can go that a caravan cant.. Also a lot of the free roadside camps have tracks leading 'inland' from their main areas with ideal spots to set your rig up.

Those tracks out the back of rest areas are what we look for if needed to stop along the road. Often only a camper trailer can get down them. Tracks only found in a few rest areas as many have a fence at the back.
