200 Series V8 Diesel Economy

I have been considering buying a 200 Series and have read a few articles on their fuel economy which do not sound to good when I see comments like the diesel economy is not much different to the petrol model when towing.

My 100 Series Turbo diesel usually uses around 18 to 20ltrs/100kms towing a 2.7tonne van at around 100k/hr. Naturally these numbers can change with head wind and hills but on average that's what I get most trips.

So what kind of economy do people get with their 200's when towing?
When quoting figures could you mention weight of your van and what speed you drive at.

2015 ttd: just car, around town/highway driving 14-15l/100. It is loaded up with a lot of accessories that do need to be trimmed back a bit.

Towing a 3.5t van: good flat roads, no wind 21-22lt/100 at 95-100km/h. gets upto 25l/100 in crap conditions

These are what I've got, everyone drives different with different accessories or none on there car.

We have a 2016 VX 200, with a few accessories such as a drawer system and fridge and bullbar. Towing our 2.6 ton van on a 3 month trip to WA last year averaging about 90k we averaged 20l per 100k. The worst was about 28l/100 into a very strong headwind, the best was 16l/100k when the wind was directly behind for a couple of hundred k. When not towing we get about 12l/100k on the open road at around 100k.

We had a 2010 Pajero for 6 years before we got the 200 and the fuel economy is similar, but the 200 definitely tows the van easier and is extremely comfortable.

Friends have a 200 series petrol....they have recently changed caravans..First one was a Crusader Manhatten..21 footer weighed about 3 ton..they tow slowly at around 80 - 85 kph and got around 20L ph.
their current van is a 24 foot New Age, Big Red series which they overload seriously and are now getting 23 to 24 Lph .towing at the same speeds.

Yes I guess I was expecting economy similar to my 100 Series due to a much more advanced diesel with common rail and all the smart computer stuff.

The 200 is only .4ltrs bigger than the 100Series but is much more powerful than the 100 Series in KW's and torque so I expect you use that extra and you cannot get something for nothing.

My sons V8 petrol 100 Series economy is not good so maybe the new petrol V8 has been improved some.

I've found the fuel economy with the 200 to be about 2 - 3 litres more (per 100 k) than my 100 diesel turbo (chipped) - sometimes very similar - towing or not.

Hi JR.
Unless you are dead set on Toyota I would recommend you have a look at the Y62 Patrol. It is packed with more options than a 200 series Sahara and cost les than a 200 GXL.It is a petrol 5>6 litre petrol. Fuel figures are about 1 litre per hundred more than the 200 but the initial cost saving will buy a lot of petrol. It has 580 newtonmeters of torque more than adequate for towing. Towing capacity 3.5 to.
Im not trying to push you onto a Patrol JR. But I think it is worth having a look.

:?: Maybe its time to consider a Discovery 4. Bigger payload than a 200, no suspension mods needed, almost as powerful, 8 speed box, more economical, cheaper. :?:

My D-Max towing the 16 footer that has a ball weight of about 200 kgs has just returned me 11.5 litres per 100 or on the old scale, 24.5 MPG.
I have seen lots of large vans being towed by D-Maxes but don't know what the economy is with them.

I have been a bit slow to respond to your comments so thanks for all the input.

I am a diesel person through and through and this will be my last vehicle before the regulations completely ruin the diesel engine.

I have a lot of respect for the Nissan Patrol as my travelling friends have the last of the old 4.2ltr turbo and they are bullet proof. Once Nissan put that small engine in them that was the end in my book. I am a bit dirty with Nissan as they were the only real competition for the Landcruiser and now Toyota as usual can place any price they like on their vehicle as the Nissan is not there to keep them honest.

British vehicles were the only one for me in the sixties but the Japs changed my ideas about vehicle reliability and after travelling with a friend to work for many years in his Range Rovers I cannot even consider a Discovery.

D-Max have a good name but I just like having a vehicle heavier than may 2.7tonne van and am still a bit old fashion and like having cubic inches.
