Glanyard,
just a thought, bearing in mind that this is not my area of expertise.

Have you tried towing your van with only the 7 pin plug connected? (No Anderson and stuff)

One of the reasons for issues is low battery voltage.

Don't know how your set-up is wired but my fridge is connected via Anderson Plug and draws 275 watts.

Wouldn't take too long for it to trigger my Redarc VSR.

Even if you tow a box trailer, the mandatory lights should draw a similar current as a van.

Gerry,
Low battery was one of the things that the dealer looked at last week but after doing some testing, they don't think that is the problem.
However, I like your suggestion and will try it when I get the van back this week; hopefully.

Problem fixed.
It would seem that there was an intermittent short that didn't show up during testing of the van; it must have occurred when we were mobile.
My auto electrician by-passed part of the wiring on the right side of the ute and that has now succeeded in eliminating the warning lights mentioned earlier. However that would have to be done on a replacement vehicle with similar attributes as the D-Max.
If we get another van, that by-pass wiring may have to be removed.
As a result of this modification to the wiring, I was able to stay in cruise control on our last trip, when required and thus attain the best economy for this vehicle so far; 10.5 litres per hundred or 30 MPG in the old currency whilst towing our 16 footer-I'm happy! :)

Glanyard,
I am having some trouble following what the cause was, except that it was an intermittent fault.

As you have not brought up ISUZU, can I assume that the short wasn't in the factory wiring?

Also how could changing the van make the bypass redundant?

The fault was in the van as an intermittent problem meaning it came about when a wire/conductor came in contact with something that caused things to occur when the van was moving.
The short was not in the factory wiring of the D-Max.
If I get another van, there is a good chance that it will not have the same fault.
