Post by wombat56 » Sun Aug 21, 2016 10:04 am

G'day all
I have a Mazda Bt-50 looking at installing a gauge to monitor the transmission as I will be doing the lap in 2017 and on the road about 3 - 4 years Can anyone please advise me on which one would be a better one
My tug is 2016 freestyle ute 6 speed auto with canopy snorkel nudge bar uhf installing a Kickarse portable battery pack tow pack etc
Am returning to Oz from Thailand in October and will be doing some renovations to the Regent Series 3 Cruise 2008 New roof mount Dometic 3000+airconditioner as the one in the van is too small and not very useful

I have no idea which is the better, both are getting the data from the OBD port so both would have access to the same data it would just be a personal preference as to how you want it displayed. If you only want to know the transmission fluid temp then maybe there is a display you can get for your vehicle.

The Mitzy has its own "drive computer" (which looks suspiciously like a Scangauge style display) and the only thing that usually interests me is the "how far can I go before I need fuel" function.

I do own and I do recommend the ownership of an OBD scanner. Very very handy if you come to grief somewhere and have to call for assistance you can plug the thing in and diagnose the fault so that whoever is coming to help knows what the problem is and gives them a clue as to what parts to bring.

Also handy when buying a second hand car or taking a car with a problem to a mechanic especially if you know what the problem is before asking for a quote….

One other thing to bear in mind are the "new" driver distraction laws. Used to be only mobile phones but now that legislation has been changed to "Driver Distraction" and that includes the use of "Aftermarket Accessories" e.g. navigators, gauges, iPods, mobile phones.

In the event of an at fault accident if you used the "I was just checking the Scanguage……" excuse you could be done for "Distracted Driving".

Would he have a problem? No, he's a truck driver they can do anything.

The Scanguage looks good a lot of information in one unit.

Just as long as that truck is not being driven along the Hume on the wrong side of the road we will be safe...

They are both excellent products and I have several Redarc products in both my car and the caravan.

I also have a Scangauge which sits atop my steering column giving me a range of readings (4 at a time) including my transmission fluid temperature.

As already stated, the scangauge has a number of additional functions including reading and resetting fault codes, but I guess it depends on your preference. The Redarc gauges are all digital and look amazingly cool and most also give you a dual readout.
