Re: Would You Buy One of These?
It is interesting that the utes when fitted with a tub use the same mount points.
I wonder how many tub fitted utes have ever had their back (chassis) broken like the tray fitted utes.
One point which to me is a disadvantage, but an advantage for tubs is that the payload area is reduced significantly due to the width of the walls and tailgate, plus the wheel arches. Load carrying volume is drastically reduced with a tub.
Admittedly, the load carrying area of tubs do not overhang the axle as much as trays, but they are very similar in length overall. I am talking about legal length trays here, and not oversized trays that are an accident in waiting.
Has anyone seen a tub fitted ute with a broken back?

G'day All,
What I think you will find is that these vehicles were purchased as having a TUB fitted originally, and then the tray added at/or immediately after purchase.
I have a mate who purchased a Isuzu Dmax Crew cab UTE only to have a OEM tray fitted the day after he purchased it.
People are doing this as it is cheaper when the vehicles are being sold during the sales season.
Cheers,
PeterM.

I wonder if these pictures coming out again have anything to do with the fact that the Triton has overtaken the Hilux as the number 1 selling twin cab ute in Australia No that wouldn't be it

Hi Frank,
The last pic was of a Hilux - that blows your theory. I wonder if, when the extended traybacks are fitted, do they also add an extension of the chassis to also move back the tow bar.
Extending the chassis so that the towball is far enough back to practically accommodate the position of the tow coupling is something that should require an engineer's certificate. I am sure the car manufacturer would frown on such practices. Insurance companies may smile at another way out of paying claims.

Hadn't even looked at that one that close but I guess you're right if the tray is that far back some might make the tow bar "longer" so that they don't have to reach under the tray
