Paul,
I had made a shield for my Navman but I ended up placing it at the top of the windscreen beside the rear view mirror, every time it turn it on it tells me it can't find the satellites but in about a minute it starts to work, doesn't get too hot and doesn't get "drowned' in sunlight either

Post Re: Avoid a hot GPS
Hi Frank,
That's a good idea, and no doubt there are many good ideas out there. Every suggestion is of benefit to another forumite and makes good reading as most folk will or have had the same problem. :D

I reckon what ever makes the thing easily visible to the driver. I was just happy that it gets the signal the way I covered it.
I mean I was in the boon docks and made it at a rest break. I sort of thought of shade mesh for the final effort. Thinking it may be better to get the signal as well.
The Garmin gets the signal immediately and the Hema can take up 10 minutes especially if it is cloudy.
I want to make it as easy as possible for that purpose.
I tried the bought one and not only did make a mess of the gps but it too was close fitting, and not great at preventing heat.

This is how I mounted my GPS in the Pajero. I had an empty slot below the clock, so I cut a block of wood to fit and covered it with felt. Removed the suction cup and screwed the mount to the block.
It is easier to read, not in full sun, always gets a signal and can be removed for security.
This wont work for every vehicle, but if you have a spare slot on the dash, give it a try.

That Hema should be in the bin, but they kept fixing it and it was so unreliable that I had to get the Garmin.(Well, do we have to get any thing?)
Finished they gave me another unit of the same type as a replacement, but the same model.Very good for the outback and useless for the city. The Garmin is the other way around so I actually only have one GPS made up of two models.
And I reckon they are all the same Bundy , now and again one falls of the screen. But that's only because I paid like, 7 to 8 hundred dollars for each of them. If I had not been such a cheapskate they would have invented a really decent mount. :D
It's all good fun, in the end they have been very handy in the scrub just the same. But both have issues.
Back up service is great on the Hema but they sure need to be.

Jock are you pull the collective leg here.......or didn't you read about that in my post....

OOPS! sorry D.T. Missed it in your post.

Hi Deiseltogo
Looks good but I think in Victoria unless the GPS is factory fitted it has to be positioned in the rh lower corner of the windscreen not in the centre?

Hi geobell, Good point.
My understanding is that it can be placed in a safe area of as little obstruction as possible. This may also be different for diferent drivers, and the vehicle involved.

This is just an example from Qld.
http://www.nrma.com.au/queensland-drive ... y-not-look
The research also suggested that the safest position for a portable GPS unit is the right front lower corner of the windscreen. Of the positions tested, this location created the smallest blind spot for the driver**.

Post Re: Avoid a hot GPS
I am actually having a problem finding the Vic road rule in the placement of a gps. :D
from SA
http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t5 ... r-gps-etc/
Here's some info from SA regs, however as a general rule vehicles must comply with Australian Design Rules, which are quite complex to interpret (as was my job years ago).
31Driver's view and vehicle controls
A motor vehicle must be built:
(a) to allow the driver a view of the road and of traffic to the front and sides of the vehicle so the driver can drive the vehicle safely; and
(b) with its controls located so the driver can drive the vehicle safely.
42Television receivers and visual display units
(1) A television receiver or visual display unit must not be installed in a vehicle so any part of the image on the screen is visible to the driver from the normal driving position.
(2) However, subrule (1) does not apply to:
(a) a television receiver or visual display unit that cannot be operated when the vehicle is moving; or
(b) a driver's aid in any vehicle or a destination sign in a bus.
Examples of driver's aids
1 Closedcircuit television security cameras.
2 Dispatch systems.
3 Navigational or intelligent highway and vehicle system equipment.
4 Rearview screens.
5 Ticketissuing machines.
6 Vehicle monitoring devices.
(3) A television receiver, or visual display unit, and its associated equipment in a vehicle must be securely mounted in a position that:
(a) does not obscure the driver's view of the road; and
(b) does not impede the movement of a person in the vehicle.
See the red bit above it's the key here in SA.
