Hi

We have just ordered a new Coromal through City Caravan Centre in Brisbane for delivery March/April 2012.

They only require 10% but were happy to negotiate a lower amount, when requested.

This will be the second van purchaed from them and we find them a pleasure to deal with.

20% does seem a bit excessive.

We paid 5% deposit on our van and generally found that most required no more than 10%. Is the van being custom made with a lot of variations from standard? I have heard of people being asked to pay more than 10% when they have ordered something that is completely custom made, but I would be very very wary of handing over that much money in advance given the number of caravan makers that have gone out of business in the past.

If you order through a dealer and the dealer goes broke then you've got a problem and can kiss the deposit goodbye.
If you order through a dealer and the manufacturer goes under, then the dealer has a problem not you.
When ordering through a dealer a contact exists between you and the dealer, where the dealer agrees to supply a specific brand and layout of van at an agreed price etc.
Another contact exists between the dealer and the manufacturer for the supply of the van to the dealer.
As the supplier of the goods (Van), the dealer is responsible for warranty issues. It's then up to the dealer to claim recompense from the manufacturer.

When we purchased our Lotus Trooper $70k and a bit.
The dealer asked for $1k as a deposit.
He put the cheque in his folder and it wasn't cashed until we took delivery of the van.
