Fuel usage figures - just curious

Post by Three Dogs » Thu Jun 17, 2010 6:10 pm

I have an 80 series Land Cruiser naturally aspirated diesel towing our 21' Jayco and it's returning 18 litres per 100 kms cruising at 90 kms/hr. My next experiment is to cruise at 80-85 and see how much difference it makes. I anticipate a couple of litres per 100 kms.
I'm curious as to how much some of the more modern naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesels are using.
Now have four dogs. Molly, Misha, Maddy and Morgan. Yep, they all travel with us!

Fuel Usage

Post by Haji-Baba » Thu Jun 17, 2010 7:15 pm

80 Series Diesel, last 2000 kms. pushing a 15-20 knot head wind with a 16 foot van attached 80-95 kmph. fourth gear,
18- 20 LP 100kms.

No wind, last half of the same trip 80-95 kmph. fifth gear sometimes, 16-18 LP 100kms.

Boat on top of car helps to cut head winds.

fuel usage

We have just purchased 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3ltr 6cyl diesel in Sydney - drove home to Brisbane averaged 9.3ltrs per 100 (not towing) - have yet to get electronic brakes put in to tow.

However, we have a 2000 Jeep GC V8 which we were using to tow 20ft Majestic with ensuite (2468ATM) - last trip from Brisbane to Canberra on coast road using premium unleaded achieved 17ltrs per 100k. Bought the diesel model because could not always get "fresh" premium unleaded when we ventured off the coast road as most use diesel inland.

Think we should sell the V8? V8 will tow 3000kg whilst diesel will tow 3500kg.

I too have a 1HZ Landcruiser (105 series) but with aftermarket turbo. Generally, consumption towing varies between 14 and 18 L/100km.

However, I have experimented a bit with towing in 4th and overdrive (only on the flat) and have found that economy drops significantly. Even though the revs are down, the right foot is as well. The extra fuel consumption is also reflected in a higher exhaust gas temperatures (have EGT gauge fitted).

Apart from most gear boxes not liking to tow in 5th, I would suggest towing in 4th is not only kinder mechanically, but saves on fuel as well.

My patrol gets between 22 and 24 litre per100kms towing 2.5 ton. Thirsty but I like the power. You can put all the wiz bangs you like on a small motor but there is still no substitute for cubes.

4.5 ltr GU Patrol petrol on gas towing 17ft 6in full van on gas about 26ltr per 100 km which equates to about 12 lt/100 to diesel in dollar terms
