We kept a log of every cost over the 3 months we were travelling north last year. With 3 kids we spent over the $1,000 each week, being on diesel, food, activities and incidentals (new clutch, etc.). We left nothing out. The families we met were also spending the same amount. We were moving around quite alot, which certainly adds to the cost. We were getting approximately 400km to the tank (80L in a 3L GU Patrol). Here is the link to our budget page with all expenses. http://www.thisiswhereweare.com/budget.html Hope this is helpful

Some of the free camping we have done, have turned out to be the highlights of the trip. We have been able to stay in the most ideal spots, like in Cape Gloucester, where we parked up on the sand next to the water. Other times, we have been reaslly tired so we just stop where ever is convenient. Free camping has its disadvantages though. At times, it is so difficult driving around all day, everyday with the van on, especially if you want to park somewhere and have a look around. Im glad you liked the website, I am in the process of updating and changing a few things at the moment, but as usual these things take time...

We did similar, bought the food, Vacuum packed it with a "Sunbeam" food saver, now frozen, but when we take of, it will be in the "Engel" as a fridge, lasts over two weeks that way. We also slice up meal size cold meats and Vac pack and also Vac pack cheese into meal size, or 5's Nibbly size. Cheers,

We had the butcher cryovac our meat in evening meal portions which we kept in the fridge and freezer. The vegetarian sausages and nutmeats from Woolworths and Coles are also pretty good And best of all they keep for years in the cupboard
