Post Toilet Holding Tank Freezing
Can anyone give me some advice as to the chances of our toilet caravan tank (black holding one) freezing up. Has anyone had this happen? We are travelling to Beechworth next week and I noticed that their weather is going below 0 deg at night. How can we stop this happening??? Need advice quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post Re Toilet Tank Freezing
Hi MargStew,

We have been in temps below freezing & never encountered that problem.

Our Thetford has a lot of air around it, so I think the temp would have to be well below freezing for the toilet tank to freeze, although it may be possible with a very small amount of contents.

If you are in the habit of using it during the night, that should keep it from freezing anyhow.

The thing most likely to freeze is your water hose if you are connected to water in a caravan park.

If you think it will be very cold, disconnect your water hose & empty it out, so it doesn't block up with ice.

Very simply you could put some salt in it, salt water doesn't freeze until minus 2;

Ensure that the holding tank is not open to the air;

If there is room, wrap an old towel around the holding tank.

With the extremes of temp, you will know doubt have your van heated which in all likelihood will stop everything from freezing.

I would be more concerned with your fresh water tanks freezing - they are not insulated and sit much closer to the ground.

Cheers.

Hi There,

We live in at 1200mts in Jindabyne. Our van has 2x 85 lts. water tanks. we fill them before we go north. No problem freezing.

If you are in the van, your boddy temp should keep everything in order.

Beechworth is not that cold. We get -14'c in winter, then we drain the tanks.

If you have a problem, jusy add some Metho!!

It's a well known fact that poo can't freeze.
Have you ever seen a frozen one??
Good luck with your trip to Beechworth
It's a lovely place ,check out the lolly shop and have a pie at the bakery.

My Owner/Trainer cooks a chilli that makes me worry that the plastic tank might melt. Finding asbestos toilet paper is always a problem.

I think there is a much greater chance of your hose connected to the caravan park tap and your sullage hose freezing than you holding tank. If staying in a carvan park I recommend that you disconnect and drain you water hose before going to bed. The water in the tap will only freeze if it is really cold say -6.

Cheers

The holding tank is inside the van body? It should not freeze in temperatures quoted.

Another question is if all nomads head north for winter? Why would any one want to go to Beechwoorth in a van for winter? We were there in Spring last year and it was COLD!
