That's cool Macca. Have a 100 amp/hour up the yard we think may be stuffed, will go up and try this out.

Re: Alkaline battery test?
Update on 100 amp/hr test as per the clip. Battery did not bounce so guess it is OK. Just need to stick it back together

Re: Alkaline battery test?
tried this while having dinner at my sons home last night. the empty one did infact bounce several times then rolled on its side. whereas the close to full one didnt bounce but always rolled on its side. but clearly there is a difference.
lots of fun, sort of helpfull if you dont have a battery tester.but it works.
cheers rod

Re: Alkaline battery test?
I just read this.... and tried it too.
The bouncing bit is quite true. There is a big difference between a good and bad battery. The falling over is less consistent. Bad ones mostly fall, good ones sometimes. Clearly it depends on the way you drop them. As the bouncing test is very clear then ignore the falling over bit.
To me a few seconds thought suggests than a depleted battery chemical change process produces gas that inflates the battery base fractionally. As soon as solid contact is removed between the base and the internal mass the base becomes a spring. It only needs a few thou gap. Often really flat batteries have a bulge in the base and this would also account for them more likely to fall over in the drop test.
