What to look for when choosing a used van or motorhome

For second hand

OUTSIDE OF THE VAN.

Check the outside for signs of repairs & dents.
Check ridge around pop-top for signs of rust or leaks.
Check skirt on Pop-Top for signs of wear & tear particularly look for mould.
Check roof to see that the seals are still good and as to whether they have more sealant than necessary which is a sigh of recent repairs.
Check tyres including spare for any unusual wear and check that they have a good amount of tread and all tyres are the same type.
Check that the spare wheel bolts match the wheel on the van. *Check the under frame to see what sort of travel it has done.
Check sub frame for any signs of rust.
Check cords leading to brakes for any signs of repairs or breakage.
Check gas bottle noting date does not exceed 10 years from date on bottle otherwise you are up for a new one or have that one tested for use.
Check front sub frame to see that it has no defects.
Check jockey wheel.
Check tow hitch to see if the bolts haven't rusted.
Check chains.
Check lighting cord to see if it is good order.
Check lights to see that they are in working order.
Check the compliance plate on the front draw bar.
Check licence papers.
Check tow hitch.

INSIDE THE VAN.

Check lights to see they are working properly.
Check roof for any signs of water leaks.
Check Pop-Top skirt for wear & tear.
Check cupboards to see what sort of state they are in.
Check under mattress for any signs of mould & check for reasonable wear & tear.
Check cupboards underneath for any damage or wear.
Check flooring for rips or tears.
Check fridge to see if in working order and in reasonable condition.
Check stove/oven to see that it has been kept well.
Check water pump to see that water is coming from tank.
Check windows, curtains, and edges for any signs of leaks.
Check door to see that it is in good working order.

ANNEX if there is one.

Check roof for mould and around area of roof where it joins on to the caravan.
Check pull out to see if still has retained its spring.
Look for any signs of leaks through the roof or where it joins caravan.
Unfold all sides and see that they fit correctly and that no mould is present.
Check zips to see that they slide up and down without any problems.
