It is transmitted sexually, by breast feeding, or by blood to blood contact and is centred mainly around Alice Springs and in the indigenous society.

Yes, certainly scary and one wonders why there has been so little research or action over the decades that this virus has been known about. Having said that and looking at how it’s transmitted, I don’t think too many of us here are in danger of contracting this disease by just passing through or even staying for a while in the areas affected… unless of course you don’t behave yourself.

Another one of the horrible virus that seem to be raring it’s head.

One thing that I can’t understand is that they have eradicated Smallpox but it came from somewhere originally so it could come back like it did originally.

Now that smallpox is recognised as being eliminated world wide, there’s no need to vaccinate everyone cos there’s not too many places that you can actualy catch it!! :o

As it stands, I believe that even the last known places anyone could potentially find the smallpox virus this century (ie, in specialist medical research labs) no longer keep the virus; IIRC, they destroyed the last samples around 2010 or thereabouts after it was determined that vaccines could be recreated without resorting to the live virus. So unless you are working in an illicit lab actually seeking to re-develop the live virus, you really don’t need vaccination against smallpox any more! ;-)

Btw, (& again this is only if IIRC, so it could be waaay off base) the generally accepted ‘point of origin’ for smallpox was a mutation of an African Rodent Virus at least 1000 years BC, & I reckon the chances of the situation/scenario that created the virus way back then almost certainly no longer exist, so it’s not likely to ever have a ‘spontaneous resurgence’ – but that’s not to say some mad evil genius couldn’t recreate it from scratch…. But seriously, there are much easier, a whole lot cheaper, & far more devastating things they could be creating; plus, all the Infectious Disease Centres in the World now know how to innoculate &/or create vaccines for smallpox, so why would anyone bother?! :???:
