Thanks GeoffC and Hank. I dont think it is in the brochure just common sense as Gas has to be turned off and 12v as Hank explained. They check all these things before you board. They are very thorough and you are checked again in Devonport .Have a good trip.

We’ve booked mid Feb returning mid March, both day trips. Worst part of this is the fare system, total length of rig is same as 2 tugs. Tug by itself $93, add van, $487 !! takes up no more space so how do they justify that ?? and they reckon fare is subsidised.

It certainly is common sense, and gas would be turned off whilst driving to the boat anyway. Their website shouts
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY GAS SYSTEMS BE ACTIVE WHILST ON THE VESSEL.
The fresh food and dairy produce is better in Tasmania anyway

The fair is subsidised on the car only, not the van. Most Tasmanians would love to see the van subsidised as well (a lot of fuel).
Also most vans are wider than a car & therefore are loaded on the same deck as trucks, or on decks with wider lanes (these are limited), to do this they lose the capacity of one lane, each side on each deck, for cars, that’s the reason you cannot always obtain a booking for your van but can for a car.

Enjoy our State

Don’t be put off by the cost, as you would know you will save it on fuel, due to short distance you travel between locations & if you freedom camp you save even more.
I work on 6 weeks out of the state with the van & you’re in front

Yeah Rainy….The van is not subsidised But, as Pooh says, dont be put off taking the van for a trip…If you plan on going for 4 to 6 weeks, it’ll still be cheaper with the van than B & B’s, Motels etc. or hiring a motorhome.

Rainy.

No need for thanks, you & all from that Island to the North of us are welcome to come & share (as my signature says) The Great Southland. But make sure you don’t cut your trip short, it takes a long time to absorb all we have here. :) ;-)

On both oue trips up north we used around $2,500 in fuel, on our trip to Tassie it cost us $1,500 to get the tug and van over and $1000 in fuel, 6 of one 1/2 a dozen of another,
