Post Caravan Tyre Pressures -
Morning all ,
this my first post on this forum. Aplogies if this topic has been covered elsewhere.

We are setting off shortly on our travels , and am busy with the preperation. We have a second hand excellent condition 21` Jayco Westport (dual axle) being towed by a manual diesel Prado.

I was hoping that some one may be able to suggest the tyre pressures that I should be using in the caravan , as I have looked in the manual supplied and can not find this info?

regards

Mark (mark and stella)

Hello Mark,

The Manufacturer's recommended tyre pressure is usally nominated on the load rating plate in the caravan's boot.

Below is a link to any earlier thread that discusses the 4PSI rule regarding tyre pressures

Hope this is of help

Hi Mark and welcome

The suggested tyre pressures should be on a plate installed by Jayco, either just inside the step of the van or in its boot.

If nothing there, you can roughly determine the pressure required if you know the loaded weight of your van and then check the tyre wall for information.

I'll take a stab at 2200kg - divided by 4 = each tyre needs to support 550kg

On the sidewall of your tyres there should be raised lettering with words to the effect of "maximum load X kg at XX PSI"

If your tyres say maximum loan of 800kg at 60 PSI, divide the actual load by the maximum - in my example 550/800 = 0.69.

Multiply this by the maximum pressure = 0.69 x 60 = 41 PSI.

This is the approx pressure you should have in cold tyres.

A good simple test in addition is to check the pressure after travelling for an hour or so. The pressure should generally not increase by more than 4 PSI between cold and hot, so if your pressure has increased by more than this you need to increase the cold tyre pressure.

Cheers.

Mike

The tyre pressure shown on a Jayco compliance plate is the Cold pressure for the unladen van. When loaded a higher pressure will be required.

It would help if you could give the weight on the wheels.
But if not possible, I would start around 45 PSI then invoke the 4 PSI Rule.

ozjohn.

I weighed my van loaded and did my own calculations initially.

Perhaps by pure coincidence the pressure suggested on the compliance plate for my single axle Expanda (55 PSI) was pretty much spot on for the ATM. (can't recall the exact figure, but a shade over 1700kg).

When loaded our van is not at the ATM, so I run about 50 PSI in each tyre.

I wouldn't like to rely on the compliance plate being 100% accurate, and of course tyre size and profile will affect load ratings, so some mathematics using the actual loaded weight and load rating of the tyres is going to be far more accurate.

Cheers.

I tried 45psi in my vans tyres (a 23 foot Jayco) and the whole rig bounced all over the place  . Felt like I was on a boat, so i dropped the pressure to 41psi put the tyre dog system on it and found it much more comfortable and more stable to tow, and haven't got to 4psi above the 41 psi yet but I did only drive about 85klms before we were home.
