Inverter Generators

Post by Debdee » Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:53 pm

Just noticed, over the past couple of weeks, a few "new model" generators being advertised as having inverters built-in. Anyone had any experience with them yet? Are they up to speed as far as powering airconditioners, microwaves, TVs and computers? :?:

They have been around for a while. A good example is the Honda EU20i. Many caravanners use them. They are the way of the future because the engine does not have to run at full speed to achieve the correct frequency output (50 Hertz) as with a conventional alternator. They adjust their engine speed according to electrical load and so tick over quietly when lightly loaded. The output is pure sine wave and fine for electronics, and also air-con if a suitable sized unit is chosen.

Didn't realise they'd been around that long  but probably just hadn't noticed 'em before because we hadn't previously heard about 'em

Thanks, Old Techo - will keep a note of that Honda one, it might be handy information, when we're a little closer to finally doing our trip ;-)

Honda has a newer model gen out replacing the 20 ei. It's the same cost weight n size I beleive but is now a 22 ei .This may be able to run the air conditioning which the 20 ei couldn't manage. Just a thought !

When I bought my 2.0i last year (before the 2.2i came out) they guaranteed that it would start any newer (caravan) air con on the market

Went to Haughton Honda yesterday while in town to buy a 2.2 and the buggers have run out of stock. They got 30 of them in a short while ago and they all walked out the door in record time apparently. Will have to wait a couple of weeks. :(
