We had our van built with four water tanks and we travel with them mostly full.
A couple of years back we encountered a prime mover on our side of the road on a sweeping right hand bend. Frantic collision avoidance followed. The truckie woke up (I believe) and steered hard left. It was so close that our right hand mirror was smashed. This was the only contact and he missed the caravan. Next I was headed towards a drop of over ten metres off the roadside and had to swerve hard right to avoid going over the edge. The truck didn’t have a trailer and I believe that if he did I wouldn’t be penning this post now.
I look back and conclude that with all the water tanks full the centre of gravity was lower and the avoidance action by me would not have been as successful if the tanks were empty.
During the action I dislocated my right shoulder that was weak from an old sports injury. The whole incident was scary and we feel lucky to have survived.
