Vehicle wood collecting frame.

Post by dieseltojo » Sat May 21, 2011 8:23 pm

I decided to make an easy to assemble and disassemble rack for wood gathering that may suite some who like free camping.
Getting wood is a lot easier if it doesn’t have to be thrown into the truck so this is an alternative. My truck is set up for rough country and so I basically made some frames to hang off existing gear, and can be put away when not required. It is only what fits my rig, but these things are only ideas that can be adapted to different vehicles. It just depends on what sort of camping you like to do. Where we go wood gathering is of prime importance.
With this idea you can get decent logs that others can’t and bring them back to camp for cutting.
The main thing is to have a decent bottom support which takes the weight of the load fairly centrally. I will post further pics to show construction later.

I now have to note that I cannot accept ownership, truth, quality, or veracity, of articles I may quote off the internet.

It looks frail but believe me there is sure plenty of weight in those logs and this was 6 k from camp. It didn’t move at all, and here is shown the main support bar under the load. It is of 60 x 60 x 5 mm thk steel angle.

The frame empty, is pretty simple. The ability to carry such a big log, is the bar that fixes to the tow hitch, and takes the weight.

There is a good sized bolt to do the work of keeping it in place.

The other parts are removable as well and it all folds up for storage. Its rough and ready but beats carrying wood in the truck.

I thought I would add another couple of pics of the folding bottom frame for clarity.

It folds for transporting.

DT,
One of the earlier photos seems to show the tow ball welded to the WDH.
If it is, why?
What happens if the ball breaks when you are out and about.
Because of what happened to me, I wouldn’t dare do that.
