Do NOT Do This To Your Fridge, It May WORK

Post by tar trekka » Fri Nov 30, 2018 9:26 pm

Hi there,

We finally got away for a two months, September & October in our new Caravan, all good BUT.

The Dometic RMD 8555 Fridge was a BIG FAIL.

On setting 5 ( Max ), Freezer - 8 degrees Fridge 4.5 Degrees. (Even in Freezing Ballarat )

I had a Fan in my “Box Of Bits”, difference NEGLIGIBLE.

On returning Home, I made the following Modifications:-

Step 1:- I made a “Baffle”, a piece of Tin Plate, 55 X 20 cms

I Glued a piece of “Hi Density Foam” 55 X 17.5 X 4 cms to one side.

The “Bottom Edge Of The Foam" was Chamfered to Assist Air Flow”.

(Note the Foam is SMALLER than the Plate, to allow a strip 55cm x 2.5 cm for “Screw Holes”).Five Screw Holes along the "Top Edge of the Baffle”.

Put the Baffle inside the “Top Fridge Vent”, moved down opposite the “Top Condenser Element” & screwed the Baffle to the “Outside Van Wall”.

This REDUCED the gap between the Condenser & Wall from 60 mm to 20 mm, as per “Installation Specifications”.

The Baffle must be big enough & located so that is OPPOSITE THE WHOLE CONDENSER ELEMENT.

Step 2:- Move the Temp Sensor Bulb from the Fins inside the Fridge Cabinet.

Slip the Wire between the “Drip Tray” & the Wall & allow the Temp Sensor Bulb to HANG BELOW the Drip Tray.

Step 3:- Remove the “Drip Reservoir” from the inside the Bottom Outside Vent, extend the Plastic Tube & redirect the Water to the outside through the BOTTOM SLOT in the Vent.

Move the “Automatic Temp Switch” to the RIGHT, so the “Inbuilt Fans” operate EARLIER.

NOW ON SETTING 3:-

250 Volts, AVERAGE TEMPS over three days.

Freezer - 14.6 Degrees

Fridge 1.8 Degrees.

Tar Trekka.

Any day above the ground is a great day.

PS. Fans IS NOT a solution for a "Bad Installation", in my opinion.

TT you sound like you have nailed it.Incorrect installation seems to be a problem when you have a yak around .We have never had a problem with our 3way on the golf van but I believe that it was installed properly. We even have a roof vent above the sealed space at the rear that aids the flow of air.

Sounds like an improvement alright. Hard to visualize some of the moves with out pics. :)
I now have to note that I cannot accept ownership, truth, quality, or veracity, of articles I may quote off the internet.

We've got an older fridge but I made a baffle for it a couple of years after we bought the van and added 2 computer fans to the back
I had removed the dridge and added some insulation batts to both sides and the top of the fridge
We usually run the fridge on 1 but need to take it to 3 on hot days
The max is 7
In winter we turn the fridge off at night or the whole thing turns to freezer

Hi there,

Five hours ago, I changed the Thermostat from 3 to 4.

Now -18 in the Freezer & 1 in the Fridge.

A bit "Too Cold" in the Fridge on 4, but should be OK as the "Days Get Hotter".

"And Another Thing".

The first Pic shows the "Temp Switch" for the "Onboard Fans".

If you connect each side of the "Temp Switch" to a Switch inside the Van, you can turn the "Onboard Fans" ON Manually.

No need to find "Power", just "Bridge" the "Temp Switch".
